CHRIS CHIRICO TO DEFEND IN 2002

It was officially announced today that Chris Chirico would return to Riverhead Raceway in 2002 to defend his Blunderbust championship.  The veteran driver from Huntington edged out the second-place finisher by eight points in a points battle that came down to the final race of the season.

"In 2001, we came out determined, with a new primary sponsor and a positive attitude," noted Chirico.  The sponsor, Eddy's Trailer Sales of East Northport, has guaranteed to return in the coming year.

"Tommy Gouldsbury of Eddy's Trailer Sales and his entire family have been a great support, both at the track and away from it," said Chris Chirico.  "It really has been a team effort, with the whole family getting involved.  I couldn't ask for a more supportive sponsor."

Chirico captured the point lead only two weeks into the season, and had gained a lead of more than 80 points before suffering several consecutive poor finishes, including one in a double point race.  As a result, he surrendered the lead for two weeks before the team's luck turned around.  When the season ended, the top four finishers were separated by a mere 38 points.  At the conclusion of the season, Chirico was awarded his first career championship.  The team's plans for 2002 were up in the air until recently, when the decision to defend the championship was made.

Eddy's Trailer Sales will once again be the main backer of the team's efforts.  The primary sponsor will again be joined by J. Russo Contracting, F. Paul Auto Parts, Montauk Fishing Charters, Sound Side Lawn Care and Tracy Chirico Consulting.  The team will also carry the Little Shelter Animal Rescue & Adoption Center name.  New to the team in 2002 will be Oasis Limousine Specialists of East Northport.  For the first time, a Scorpion Race Engine will be under the hood of the #87 Chevrolet.  According to the team, negotiations are also underway on a number of other potential deals.  However, there are still sponsorship opportunities available.  Interested parties can visit the team's Web site at www.bobcris.com/87bb.htm or contact the team at Blunder87@aol.com for more information.

"We are looking forward to what 2002 has to offer," Chirico said.  "The division as a whole looks to be competitive and, while it would be nice to repeat in 2002, we would also like to extend our best wishes to everyone for a great season."
