GUY COSMO DECIMATES COMPETITION IN STAR MAZDA

Lexington, OH - Guy Cosmo sent a message to every driver in the Star Mazda Series:  Mid-Ohio is his track.  Cosmo lead the 25-lap race at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, June 29, winning decisively by a 10.9-second margin in the #45 www.kc-baggers.com/Racers Edge Formula Mazda.  He started from the pole after setting a qualifying time more that one second per lap faster than the next car on in the grid.  Cosmo now has seven wins out of nine starts at Mid-Ohio in open-wheel competition.

“I know that this is considered Bobby Rahal's track,” said Cosmo.  “But right now, this is my track.  The weekend didn’t start well.  We had a motor go in practice, but John and the crew at Racers Edge worked hard to get the new motor in.  After qualifying, I knew there was no chance for anyone to catch us.”

Guy Cosmo wasted no time opening his lead on the field.  By the first full-course yellow, his substantial lead put him nearly out of sight from the second place car on Mid-Ohio’s front straight.  Two more yellow flags bunched up the field for re-starts.  In spite of this, Cosmo opened his lead rapidly each time.

Guy Cosmo is no stranger to the Star Mazda victory circle.  He pulled off a podium finish for Round 1 at Sebring, won at Sears Point and finished 6th on the oval Pikes Peak circuit.  While the results and championship standings are declared by the series as provisional, Cosmo’s win at mid-Ohio should put him in the lead for the championship.

Guy Cosmo has consistently demonstrated his aptitude in several different formulae.  In 1999, he distinguished himself as one of the hottest young drivers in the US when he won the US F2000 American Continental Championship, notching five victories in the process.  Also that year, he tested in Indy Lights and was selected as a test driver for Dunlop tires.

In 2000, the 23 year-old Long Island based driver spent ten months in Denmark as the Mygale works development driver in the Scandinavian Formula 2000 series.  While there, he scored two poles, two wins, and 14 top-five finishes on his way to a second place finish in the talent rich Scandinavian open-wheel series championship.

In 2001, he has contested the Star Mazda series for Racers Edge at Texas Motor Speedway and Sebring.  Cosmo finished third at Sebring in only his second Star Mazda series start.  He also made his debut in the CART Toyota Atlantic Series.  Guy finished in the top-ten in three of his four Toyota Atlantic starts, including the daunting street circuits at Long Beach and Houston.
