Word from the Pits…
by J.A. Ackley
BLUNDERBUSTS
Tommy
Walkowiak has announced the addition of Hampton Fleet Service to his
team. Walkowiak over the off season has purchased a very potent car,
which took Henry Cataldo to the 2000 Blunderbust championship.
With added funding, and some strong power under his foot, Enduro veteran and
multiple-time winner, Tommy Walkowiak may be one to watch in the upcoming
2002 season.
CHARGERS
A racer, who has been subject to much interest in the offseason, has been
Robin Vollmoeller. ER Racing has informed LongIslandJam.com that Robin
has joined forces with John White. John will be driving a new 2002 CD SK at
selected Stafford & Thompson Speedway shows. John has also purchased a
new 2002 Troyer Modified that Robin will race in 9 races at Riverhead. Both
cars will be powered by Steve Mehner race engines.
In addition, Robin
will be back in his familiar #2 Charger at Riverhead Raceway in the 6 race
mini series, with Gershow Recycling joining as a sponsor.
Robin Vollmoeller has been racing longer than most, and has a
ton of experience under his belt. This championship winning driver
will be definitely looking for the checkered flag once again, and he
definitely knows the way to victory lane.
LATE MODELS
DeMonte
Motorsports recently announced that Ken Heagy, formerly of the #33 and #08
Modified, has joined the #45 DeMonte Motorsports team for the 2002 season. Heagy brings 5 Modified feature wins and an extensive racing
history. Kenny will run the #45 Modified on a limited schedule in weekly
competition and the two Featherlite Modified tour shows at Riverhead. In addition, Heagy may also run additional tour shows during
the year.
ENDUROS
Mountain
Speedway’s Director of Operations, “Billy B.,” has informed
LongIslandJam.com of two events of which could be of some interest to Long
Islanders. Mountain Speedway of
the Pocono, PA area, will be hosting many special events with huge payoffs
to entice racers around the Northeast to stop by and race a night.
Enduro drivers should take note.
On May 12, the “Big Car Enduro” will take place, offering a nice
$1,000 payout. In addition, a
“Small Car Enduro” will take place on August 18th, with a
nice one grand payout as well. The
events should be a ton of fun, so Enduro drivers out there should start
making plans on a trek out to Pennsylvania. For more information, you can visit www.speedwaytech.com,
a good source for Mountain Speedway information.
COMMUNITY
It’s been brought to
our attention that certain legislation in congress maybe of a threat to your
hobby. According to Summit
Racing, a new
proposed U.S. government legislation threatens to take state vehicle
scrappage programs to the next level. U.S. Senate Bill S.517 contains a
provision (Section 832) that would allocate federal funds for state
scrappage programs for vehicles more than 15 years old.
Not only does this threaten the existence of many classic and muscle
cars, this affects many entry-level to even to upper-level racing divisions.
Many non-performance vehicles are an invaluable resource for engines,
suspension components, and other parts for racecars racing weekly around the
country.
Many in the performance industry are working to amend US Senate Bill
S.517. If you would like to help, write your U.S. Senator to let them know
how this legislation will directly affect you. If you need the name and
address of your Senator, go to www.enjoythedrive.com
for a list of legislators, plus additional information on S.517 and other
legislation affecting our hobby.
