MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND DOUBLE HEADER SET

It’s time to spring into summer on the east end of Long Island and at Barbara and Jim Cromarty’s Riverhead Raceway the official kick-off is the annual Memorial Day weekend twin bill of racing excitement. The two-day speed fest will kick-off Saturday evening May 24th with a NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series program featuring the first Demolition Derby of 2003 and followed up by an Enduro program Sunday May 25th.

Five divisions of NASCAR stock car racing will perform on Saturday evening with the Blunderbust class running for the Victory Fleet Maintenance night at the race trophy. A 30-lap, double point contest is set for the Blunderbusts, their second in the month of May. Defending champion Eugene Malverty of Lindenhurst recently stated he will indeed now run the full schedule in 2003, this after announcing in the off-season he’d be a part-time competitor. Among those looking to beat Malverty to the winner’s circle for the Victory Fleet Maintenance hardware are Bobby Gardner of Westbury, Anthony Aiello of Bayport, Chris Chirico of Huntington, Sean Byrne of Brentwood, Bryan Sescila of Baldwin and Tommy “Wild Child” Walkowiak of Middle Village, Queens.

After the Blunderbusts race their feature event the NASCAR Modifieds, Late Models, Figure Eight and Chargers will all run regular distance feature events.

Once all the stock car racing excitement has been completed the season’s first bone jarring and car destroying Demolition Derby will be staged. All the top Demolition Derby talents are expected for the lid-lifter including Jimmy “Wildman” Primmy” Hummel of Bay Shore, Bob “Whiplash” Genovese of Farmingdale, “Irish” Mike O’Keefe of Islip and newlywed Tim “Hammer” Smith of Port Jefferson.

The very next afternoon action will continue with the second Enduro program of 2003 on the slate. The second ever Grand Enduro will be complimented by a full slate of Enduro racing, including the 8 Cylinder Enduro. Rounding off the busy day will be a 4 Cylinder Enduro, 4/6 Cylinder Truck Enduro, Train Race, Car Rollover Contest and One On One Spectator Drags.

The afternoon will be highlighted by the first Sunday appearance of 2003 of the Super Pro Trucks, with pit gates to open at 10:00 am and racing to go green at 12:30 pm.

As for Saturday May 24th the Late Model time trials will leadoff qualifying at 4:30 pm and the feature event racing hits the track at 6:30 pm.
