2004 NASCAR FEATHERLITE MODIFIED SERIES SCHEDULE RELEASED

The historic NASCAR Featherlite Modified Series will open its 20th season with the traditional “Icebreaker” event, April 4 at Thompson (Conn.) International Speedway, kicking off a 19-race schedule that was announced by NASCAR today. The series will visit 10 different race tracks in 2004, including eight short tracks and two superspeedways.

“The Featherlite Modified Series offers a one-of-a-kind racing experience for fans and competitors alike and, since 1985, this series has been a home to some of our brightest stars,” said Chris Boals, NASCAR’s director of regional touring. “2004 marks the 20th season of racing on this series and this schedule will showcase the Modifieds across many of the top race tracks in the Northeast. We’re bringing the excitement of NASCAR’s only open-wheeled series to fans throughout the region and look forward to another close competition for the championship.”

The Featherlite Modified Series makes the first of four visits to Connecticut’s Stafford Motor Speedway April 25, followed by 150-lap event at Waterford (Conn.) Speedbowl May 15. On May 23, the series will share the stage with the NASCAR Busch Series at the 1.0-mile Nazareth (Pa.) Speedway.

Two Featherlite Modified Series events – both in conjunction with the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series – are scheduled at New Hampshire International Speedway in Loudon, N.H. The series will first appear at NHIS July 23 and returns Sept. 17.

“You’ve got to be versatile to adapt to all these different tracks,” said 2003 Featherlite Modified Series champion Todd Szegedy. “And our races at New Hampshire are fun. They give us a good chance to show what we’ve got in front of the big guys.”

The 2004 championship chase will conclude with the Oct. 17 season finale at Thompson.

The Featherlite Modified Series, built on a 55-year tradition of NASCAR Modified Stock Car racing, began its present format in 1985. Since then, over 400 series events have been held at venues across the northeastern United States. The cars, which feature a unique, low-slung, fenderless design, represent NASCAR’s oldest division of race cars, dating back to the sanctioning body’s inaugural season in 1949. Several of NASCAR’s marquee names began their careers in the Featherlite Modified Series, including drivers Jeff Fuller, Mike McLaughlin, Steve Park, Jimmy Spencer, and crew chiefs Tom Baldwin, Jr., and Greg Zipadelli.
