RAHMER READY
TO DO BATTLE IN ATLANTIC CITY BEHIND WHEEL OF A MIKE DICELY-PREPARED
HYPER MICRO-SPRINT
ATLANTIC CITY, NJ - This time
central Pennsylvania Sprint Car star Fred Rahmer will be in
the field for the Atlantic City Indoor Race at Boardwalk Hall,
not just on the entry list.
One year after seeing his ride
for the event fall through, Rahmer has secured a rock-solid
deal that will make him a driver to watch during the two-day
extravaganza of speed on Jan. 9-10.
Rahmer, 45, of Salfordville,
Pa., is all set to pilot the Hollinger's Sports &
Turf-sponsored 600cc Micro-Sprint. The car, which was driven
in 2003 by A.J. Michael, will be adapted for competition on
the Hall's concrete surface at Mike Dicelyıs Hyper Racing
shop in Lewisberry, Pa.
"I should be in real good
shape for the show," said Rahmer. "I know I have
good equipment. It'll be up to me to get the job done on the
track."
Rahmer will effectively run as
a teammate to Dicely, the Northeast's winningest Micro-Sprint
driver in 2003. Dicely, who will handle the preparation of
Rahmer's machine, is planning a return to the Hall in hopes of
improving upon his 18th-place finish in last January's B-Main.
The chance to kick off his 2004
season in Atlantic City excites Rahmer, who is focused on
erasing memories of a disappointing 2003 campaign in the
Sprint Car ranks.
"It's a good way to start
the year," said Rahmer, who has never run an indoor event
on a concrete surface. "I'm looking forward to hanging
out and having some fun before the season really gets
cranking."
Ironically, the announcement of
Rahmer's A.C. ride comes one week after one of his chief
Sprint Car rivals, Lance Dewease, landed an Indoor Race deal.
Dewease will drive a 600cc Micro-Sprint built by New York's
Gary King.
"It should make for a good
rivalry," Rahmer said of his highly anticipated
race-within-a-race with Dewease. "I obviously race with
Lance all the time, and [Hyper reps] told me that he's driving
for one of their main nemesis [in the Micro-building
business]."
Other drivers who have entered
600cc Micro-Sprints in the event include 410/358 Sprint car
standout Blane Heimbach of Selinsgrove, Pa.; Nathan Hauck of
Manchester, Pa.; Jack Spence of Bear, Del.; Bill Unglert of
Mooresville, N.C.; Supermodified regular Scott Martel of
Bradford, Mass.; Dan McMahan of Cape May Courthouse, N.J.;
Heath Hehnly of Reinholds, Pa.; Anthony Sesely of Matawan,
N.J.; and Jeremy Lynch of Houston, Del.
Event rules allow 600cc
Micro-Sprints to compete head-to-head against Three-Quarter
Midgets. The 26-car starting field for last January's Indoor
Race A-Main featured eight 600cc Micro-Sprints. A third-place
finish by DIRT Modified star Tim McCreadie of Watertown, N.J.,
who drove the King Racing house car, led the Micro contingent.
The 2004 installment of the
Atlantic City Indoor Race will feature two full nights of
racing competition. The Fri., Jan. 9, program will see the
top-40 drivers from time trials compete in four heats, two
consolations and a 30-lap feature. Time trials are scheduled
to begin at 5:30 p.m. and the first green flag will fly at 8
p.m.
Another round of time trials
will be contested on Saturday afternoon, with all drivers
getting a chance to race on Boardwalk Hall's concrete oval. A
format of A-B-C-D-E mains will be utilized, with the 50-lap
A-Main topping the card. Race time is 6:30 p.m.
Reserved-seat tickets are on
sale through all Ticketmaster outlets. For more information
