EARLY SEASON DOUBLE
POINT RACE ON TAP FOR RIVERHEAD MODIFIEDS
Each year drivers of the NASCAR Dodge
Weekly Series look at their three double point races as a
mini-playoff. The NASCAR Modified drivers of Riverhead Raceway
will have their first race of this series this Saturday May
1st in a 50-lap event. The event will feature time trial
qualifying.
This double point race comes in week
two of the 2004 season but all the drivers including defending
NASCAR Modified champion John Fortin will be in mid-season
form for this race. Among those out to challenge Fortin for
the title this year include Chuck Steuer of Bohemia, Mike
Andrews Jr. of Quogue, Bill Park of Manorville, J.R. Bertuccio
of Centereach and Ken Heagy of Riverhead.
Perhaps no driver knows the importance
of a good finish in double point races more than former
five-time Riverhead Raceway NASCAR Modified champion Wayne
Anderson of Yaphank. Wayne was among the quicker cars in
pre-season testing and if he could win his sixth title in '04
he'd break the three-way tie held by the late Charlie
Jarzombek and Don Howe.
Other veteran drivers looking to
kick-start a run at the 2004 NASCAR Modified title in the
50-lap tilt will be Ed Brunnhoelzl Jr. of Levittown, Joe
Hartmann of Riverhead, Chris Young of Calverton, Dan Jivanelli
of Hampton Bays, Lenny Fischer of Medford and Tom Rogers Jr.
of Patchogue.
Rounding out the six-division program
will be the Late Models, Figure Eights, Chargers, Blunderbusts
and Super Pro Trucks. Time trials for the Modifieds will go
green at 4:30 pm and feature event-racing starts at 6:30 pm.
