MARQUIS BECOMES FIRST REPEAT WINNER

RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (June 5, 2004) - Jerry Marquis of Broad Brook Conn. became the first repeat winner of the 2004 NASCAR Featherlite Modified Series season with a dominating performance in the Miller Lite 200 at Riverhead Raceway.

Marquis set fast time to earn the Bud Pole Award, picked the number two starting position, and proceeded to lead all 200 laps of the race for his 16th win of his career. He is now tied with Steve Park and Mike McLaughlin for 7th on the all time series win list.

“The car was just perfect all night” said Marquis. “My crew chief came over the radio telling me to take it easy. I told him I was.” Marquis, driving the Roby’s Propane/Reynolds Auto Chevrolet, finished 2.3 seconds ahead of John Blewett, III of Howell, N.J. in the Mastrobattisto Contractors Pontiac. Blewett, a former Riverhead winner, passed Mike Stefanik with 10 laps to go and attempted to reel in Marquis but the laps quickly disappeared. Stefanik finished third in the Diversified Metals Chevrolet.

Ted Christopher of Plainville, Conn. finished fourth in the Mystique Motorsports Chevrolet. The finish moved him into second in the series point standings just 49 points behind Eddie Flemke of Southington, Conn. Flemke rounded out the Top-5 in the Ron Bouchard Auto/Hill Enterprises Pontiac.

The Top-10 qualifiers drew for starting position. Eric Beers picked the pole to start along side Marquis. Marquis led the first lap but Beers remained in second for the majority of the first 62 laps. Stefanik moved to second on lap 63 and held that position, except for a handful of laps near the midpoint of the race, until Blewett got by. Blewett, who started 5th, was never further back than sixth during the event.

Doug Coby finished 9th after starting 27th to earn the Powerade Power Move of the Race award. Gregg Shivers was the Auto Meter Rookie of the race for the first time this season.

The next event for the Featherlite Modified Series is the Lake Erie 150 at Lake Erie Speedway in North East, Pa. on June 12.
