2004 MODIFIED GRADE REPORT
by "Professor" Peter Milano

Well it's that time once again, with the fall season upon us, and winter looming just behind it, the LongIslandJam.com grading system is upon us! The Professor, Peter Milano, has looked over the entire 2004 racing season at Riverhead Raceway and has decided what grades will be given out to the top 20 drivers in each division. Each division will be graded at different points during the off season, which means, competitors will be chomping at the bit to get their grades! The 2004 Modifieds will be handed out first.

1) TOM ROGERS, JR.
#6 Riverhead Auto Mall Chevrolet

What a season 2004 was for Tommy. Last year he came away with Rookie of the Year honors along with the Figure 8 championship. 2004 saw Tom Rogers Jr. put full effort into the modified division. Tom made all 17 starts and took down 2 wins, but he seemed extremely laid back, unlike the Rogers we were familiar with in the Figure 8 class, who was known for being a hard charger in the past. 2004, brought out a whole new Tom Rogers Jr. We saw an extremely patient driver who never got hot headed when placed in tight competition. He finished a tight points battle ahead of young charger Mike Andrews Jr. by 48 points. With 2 cars sitting in the garage, one for Riverhead and another for Whelen type series racing, will we see Rogers Jr. back to defend his title every week or on the road full-time or part-time?

A+
17 races, 2 wins, 10 top 5's, 13 top 10's

2) MIKE ANDREWS, JR.
#10x Prestigious Properties Chevy

Improvement! Improvement! Improvement! The 20-year old kid from East Quogue is on a roll! He continues to impress drivers from the local area and around the Northeast. The Whelen Modified Tour is awaiting his presence on a consistent basis. Will 2005 be the year Mike and his family make the commitment to go full throttle? With a few misfortunes such as flat tires or minor tangles, we could have easily been calling Mike Andrews Jr. 2004 champion. This year draws everyone close to him like a magnet. I haven't heard one bad word about this kid. He shows respect to all the drivers on and off the track. At the World Series held at Thompson, Mike took fastest time and started up front and they saw his heart and his determination. Mike finished on the lead lap and proved he belong with the big boys and gained a lot of respect from the tour guys for not being full of himself while showing confidence with his driving skills. So to the runner-up of the Riverhead Raceway Championship

A+
17 races, 2 wins, 7 top 5's, 11 top 10's

3) JOE HARTMANN
#05 Watermill Lumber Chevrolet

I was kind of shocked to see Joe Hartmann sitting in a tie for 3rd place in points for 2004. I know Joe is capable without a shadow of a doubt, as he is a former Blunderbust and Charger champion. But, I didn't think 2004 brought Joe Hartmann much luck, but it seemed he slid under the radar. It also seems that the past few years Hartmann ends up in an accident that is remembered at years end! Joe has been known to go visit other tracks during the week and then come back for the Saturday Night Main Event at Riverhead. Joe has a lot to work with the 2004 season under his belt, 2005 could be very promising if the team can keep their eyes focused on everything going on at the track and in the pits.

B+
17 races, 1 win, 5 top 5's, 9 top 10's

4) JOHN FORTIN
#84 MortgageOne Chevrolet

A multi-time champion in the Modifieds and Figure 8s, Fortin could have walked away with the top trophy of the year again. John seemed to run into a bit of trouble on and off the track, which led to him missing the last 3 races of the year. Without making any situation worse, John sat out the last three races and missed what could have been another championship year. What will Fortin do in 2005? Will John come back and let wounds heal at home, or will he race weekly at a track abroad! Could he go give the Whelen Modified Series a go again! John is a very talented driver and should succeed wherever 2005 brings him! With no wins this season and a lot of misfortune on the track, frustration was brought to the Fortin crew. John would have gotten a higher grade, but due to missing the 3 races, I was torn giving him a lower grade, but I know his competitive heart and his driving skills. Hopefully in 2005 he will be sitting behind the wheel of one of his Modifieds again.

17 races, 0 wins, 9 top 5's, 11 top 10's

5) WAYNE ANDERSON
#15 Eastport Feeds Chevrolet

Former Featherlite Modified and multi-time Champion at Islip Speedway, New Egypt and Riverhead Raceway; it's surprising this veteran driver doesn't get more respect in the Northeast. 2004 awoke a sleeping giant, as many nights saw Wayne regain his position of charging straight to the front. The most memorable night had to be the second visit from the Featherlite Modified Series to Riverhead Raceway in August. Wayne came from the back of the pack to earn a top five and turned many heads in the process. Veteran drivers from over the years saw the Wayne that won him the tour championship in 1994.  Even with a 5th place finish in points the Anderson team has a lot to be excited about for 2005! What are the plans for 2005? Any out of state races? Will the team be gunning for a 6th title at Riverhead Raceway?

A
17 races, 2 wins, 8 top 5's, 12 top 10's

6) BILL PARK
#20 Smithtown Nissan Chevrolet

What could have been a bad season for Bill Park had a bright upside at season's end. All season long we heard that Bill had a brand new 2004 Troyer chassis coming at anytime. Bill's season was sub-par until he brought out a bright 2004 Troyer chassis and first night out the new machine took down his only win of the season.  Bill had the misfortune of getting involved in accidents during the season, more a matter of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. With 2 cars in the shop, the rumor mill says he's ordered a 2005 Troyer chassis! This will make for a very interesting 2005 season? Is it possible Bill will be looking to go out of state more often? With rumors surfacing that Whelen is placing more money into the Modified tour and speculations of having a TV deal with SPEED, how many drivers will be looking to make a splash next year!

B
17 races, 1 win, 3 top 5's, 8 top 10's

7) JOHN DENNISTON
#3 Sunoco Race Fuels Mercury

With Rookie of the Year honors going to John, he kept improving over the season and kept away from accidents. I give credit to this young driver in his first full season in a Modified, as he proved that he does belong in the ride. A lot of people have been on the kid for who he is, but he’s made a lot of those people take notice and proved to himself and others that this is where he belongs!  I hope in 2005 he keeps his head focused and stays away from negative comments made towards him and shows them in 2005 he has the fortitude to take down some wins. Will John have a new machine in 2005? He ran really well with an older modified going up against strong horsepower!

B-
17 races, 0 wins, 1 top 5's, 9 top 10's

8) LENNY FISCHER
#85 SPONSORS WANTED Chevy

Lenny, Lenny, Lenny! We are all waiting to see you in Victory Lane, hopefully 2005 will be the year we will witness it! Mid-season saw Lenny purchase a Jimmy Blewett modified, and it ran well for Lenny.  What are his plans for 2005? Full season? Will Jimmy's old Modified bring Lenny into Victory lane?

B-
16 races, 0 wins, 3 top 5's, 12 top 10's

9) KEN HEAGY
#33 SPONSORS WANTED Chevy

Ken took down the biggest race of the year at Riverhead Raceway, the 50-lapper that brought him to Concord, North Carolina. His win gave him a starting position in the main race of the North vs South Shootout. I expected to see Ken in the top five in points this year, but early mishaps changed that expectation. Kenny really came on at season's end. What will 2005 bring the Heagy "One fish, Two fish" machine, will the "98.5 The Bone" machine bring home the championship? I look forward to seeing what Kenny will do at Riverhead Raceway in 2005. Or will he end up going out of state more often, as is rumored on the message boards a lot!

B+
17 races, 1 wins, 5 top 5's, 8 top 10's

10) EDDIE BRUNNHOELZL JR.
#8x Jamaica Brake Chevrolet

Eddie is just glad the 2004 racing season came to an end. Hard luck isn't the word that faced his team this year. Lots of steam and plenty of stress came along with the 2004 racing season. He missed one race, but it could have been more, if John Fortin hadn't lent him one of his cars when they were close in the championship battle. Eddie sat 2nd in points and then came wreck after wreck as he fell in points. We all know what Eddie is capable of with all his experience and years in racing. What will 2005 bring the Brunnhoelzl clan? Hopefully 2005 will start on a bright note and keep Eddie away from other people incidents!
