TED CHRISTOPHER REPEATS
AS ICEBREAKER CHAMPION
Thompson, Conn. (April 10, 2005)
- Ted Christopher won the Icebreaker 2005 NASCAR Whelen
Modified Tour season opener in dramatic fashion by beating
Zack Sylvester of Lebanon, Conn. by a few inches at the
finish line.
The
scheduled 150 lap event at Thompson International Speedway
required a green–white-checkered finish and an extension to
154 laps because of a lat race caution. Christopher was
lined up third behind Sylvester, who was leading, and Chuck
Hossfeld who was running second. At the drop of the final
green on lap 153 Hossfeld dove under Sylvester to take the
lead momentarily before Christopher dove under both, taking
the point coming out of Turn-2. Sylvester then motored by
Hossfeld for second as the leaders took the white. Sylvester
made his final bid for the win at the finish line, but came
up just short.
For
Christopher and the Mystique Motorsports Chevrolet race
team, it was their second straight victory in the
Icebreaker. It was also the 17th series win of
his career.
“I
give a lot of credit to my crew,“said Christopher. “They
made a lot of changes to make the car the way I like to
drive it. I never give up till the end.”
Christopher also captured the Tom Baldwin Hard Charger Award
by leading the laps and the Featherlite Most Improved driver
Award.
Hossfeld who finished third, earned the Bud Pole Award.
Former champion Mike Stefanik of West Greenwich, R.I.
finished fourth. Rick Fuller of Auburn, Mass., another
former series champion, rounded out the Top-5.
Tyler Haydt was named the Sunoco Race Fuel Rookie of the
Race.
