OLD TIMER'S DAY SET FOR AUGUST 28
On Sunday afternoon August 28th
it will once again be time to turn back the clock on Long Island Auto Racing
when the annual Old Timers Day will be held at Riverhead Raceway. First
started as the Islip Speedway, Freeport Stadium and Riverhead Raceway
reunion, the event has branched out beyond Long Island and the 2005 edition
should be no exception.
Bill Denniston in conjunction with track owners Barbara and Jim Cromarty
fully understand the importance of racing heritage, which is why this event
became an annual gathering. In 2005 the Himes Museum of Auto Racing
Nostalgia headed up by racing historian Marty Himes will again play a huge
role in the Old Timers Day festivities. Race cars and drivers from days gone
by will not just gather in the Riverhead pits, but will also see time on the
quarter mile oval as well.
Some expected to return for 2005 will be the #1 Coupe and Vega of the
late, great "Charging" Charlie Jarzombek, the X-3 Vega of Jim Hendrickson,
and the 7-11 of Joe Krukowski to name just a few. Event organizers want to
emphasize that the Old Timers Day is open to racecars and drivers from all
over the Northeast, asphalt or dirt all are welcome.
Also in action on this day to recall the golden era will be a sneak peak
at the future with the Eastern Kart Racing Association go-karts, which in
recent years have become a feeder system for the weekly NASCAR stock car
racing at Riverhead.
So if you're filling out your vacation schedule and you live
out-of-state, mark on your calendar Sunday August 28th for Old Timers Day at
Riverhead Raceway. For further information please dial 631-842-RACE or visit
