JENTILE AND PAT VERWYS EXPLODE WITH NEETS WINS

The ABC Car Crushing, NEETS Holiday Stock Car Series was at it again Sunday, July 3rd at Mountain Speedway with the running of their ‘Firecracker Smacker on the 3rd of Junkly’.  Joe Jentile and Pat Verwys each picked up their second wins of ’05 in the 104-lap events.

Andrew Pfuafelder led the Valley Service 4 Cyl. division to the green flag from the pole position.  However, it wasn’t even a lap later when Bob Haeger shot to the front.  The first red flag of the event came out when Ryan Nelson attempted to head into the pits.  As the cars behind him, which were running four-wide approached Nelson; three of them forced him into the wall, and also blocked the pit entrance.

On lap seventeen, Pat Verwys grabbed the top spot, after starting deep in the seventy-six-car field.  By lap thirty, Pat’s younger Brother, Pete Verwys found his machine in the second spot, not far behind his brother.

The third of six red flags came out on lap forty, when Ollie Stewart, Bill Verwys Sr, Robert Fink and Jeremy Kunkel joined together for a crash conference in turn two.  When the action resumed, Pat Verwys was still out front, but that was about to change.

When the green light came back on, Pat was slowed by a tangle in front of him as he entered turn one.  Pete pounced on the opportunity and dove underneath his brother, and into the lead.

Pete Verwys went on to take the checkers, but was later disqualified during post race inspection.  Pete’s misfortune handed the win to his older brother, Pat Verwys.  Harry Sagar, Bobby ‘Peaseman’ Pease, Duane Garrison and Shawn Wanat rounded out the top five.

A ‘burping contest’ was held during intermission, where ten people (kids and adults) entered from the grandstand and pits.  Pottstown’s Zack Brown, only 6 years of age beat out many adults as he displayed the results after a warm Pepsi.  When asked how he gained experience at it, Zack thanked his dad, Kevin.

Kory Stevens sat on the pole for fifty-four car, 104-lap Cottman Transmission 6/8-cylinder feature, but was passed by Tom ‘Slippery’ Slee soon after the green dropped.  Slee slowed with problems two laps later and Richard ‘Uncle’ Petey took over the top spot.

In the meantime, hard-charging Mark Spencer worked his way into the top five, and would soon pressure Petey for the lead.  That was until the red flag flew on lap twenty-nine for a fire under the hood of the Mike Rudolph machine.

With the green flag out again, Petey continued to lead over Spencer, and on lap thirty-nine, the red was out once again when the stalled car of Shek Weber was rear-ended hard by top ten runner, Frank Petroski.  The ambulance was brought to the scene, and after a period of time, it was announced that Petroski was all right, but had to settle for a thirty-eighth place finish.

Spencer was able to get by Petey on the next restart and took over the lead.  Meanwhile, Petey held second.  Again, things changed on lap sixty, when Petey relinquished the second place spot, due to overheating.

On the following lap, when leading, Spencer spun around a few times on the front stretch and headed in the pits with a flat right rear.  That handed the lead to ‘Racin Rich Johnson, who led the event until a lap one hundred red flag.  The red was brought out when Joe Kmetz and Richie Knell made heavy contact on the backstretch.

Following the fifth red flag, the green flew again for some exciting racing.  Sitting in second was Tim Pauch, and third was 2004 NEETS champion, Joe ‘Millionaire’ Jentile.  Johnson had problems getting his ride to speed, and Pauch had suffered damage a few laps earlier.

Jentile shot past the top two drivers with two laps to go, picking up his second win of ’05 over Pauch, Tom Moises, Rich Johnson and Phil Lomonaco.

The Bartley Racing Enterprises ‘best appearing awards’ were presented to the #94 Four Cylinder: of Rodney Nussbaum and the #02 8 Cyl. Driven by George 'Pappy' Herman.

A trial four-cylinder demolition derby ran at the end of the features, and with only six cars, proved to be a successful event!

The NEETS charity of the event was the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.  $1 from each general admission ticket will be donated to the foundation.

The next race on the NEETS tour schedule is the non-points ‘NASCARE’ event, which will be held Sunday, July 31st.  All the racing action begins at 1:00 PM.  The retro-themed event will feature past and present Nextel Cup paint schemes for the 4 cylinders and 6/8 cylinders.  Admission is $7 for ages seven and up.  Ages six and under are admitted free.  The select NEETS charity for the day will be Checkered Dreams, which is a non-profit organization, which associates racing with seriously ill children.

On behalf of NEETS and all the fans, here’s wishing all our overseas service men and women a very healthy and happy Independence Day.  Thanks to all of you in the present, ad from the past we can all do what we love!
