St.
John's, PA: Sunny Skies with no chance of rain was a
bonus for many enduro drivers, who made their way to
Mountain Speedway Sunday for the running of the non-points
ABC Car Crushing, NEETS Holiday Stock Car Series ‘NASCARE’ (NEETS
All Star and Retro Enduro) event. Many enduro racers had
their vehicles painted like Nextel Cup cars from the past
and the present. The official charity for this event was
Checkered Dreams. Aaron Johnson and Kayla Kelley, along
with their families, were on hand enjoying their day at the
track, thanks to Checkered Dreams and many of the drivers.
Bobby
‘Peaseman’ Pease led the 52-car Valley Service four-cylinder
field to the green flag for 100-laps without yellows. Pease
took immediate command over the field and lead the first
three circuits. Pete Verwys caught and passed Pease on the
third lap and looked untouchable as he raced through lapped
traffic.
A great
battle was shaping toward the front of the pack, and one
driver in that battle for second was Jimmy White, Jr.
Things changed quickly though when White entered the third
turn. While battling another driver into the turn, the two
cars touched. This sent White up into the air and onto his
roof. The red flag was immediately displayed. The driver
and his passenger were fine, as they rolled the car over,
started the engine, and headed to the pits for repair.
Amazingly, White returned to the speedway, only nine laps
down!
By lap
forty, 4C modified start, Woot Lawrence worked his way into
the top five, not far behind Pete and Verwys, who were
running one-two. Unfortunately for Lawrence, a lap -one pit
stop would put him a few laps behind the leaders.
Pat Verwys
caught and passed his brother Pete just before the crossed
flags (half way). Friday’s four-cylinder feature winner at
Mountain, Joe Grocholski entered the top three and set his
sights on the Verwys brothers.
With a
great battle unwinding for second, Pete Verwys pulled his
car to the infield on lap eighty, due to mechanical
problems. Grocholski took over second with Harry Sager in
third.
Pat Verwys
cruised to the win, seven seconds over Grocholski. Sager,
Pease and Mike Racho rounded out the top five.
Bob Kulik
led the forty-six Cottman Transmission six and eight
cylinders to the green, for their 100-lap shootout. Before
the first lap was completed, Shannon Weidler jumped into the
top spot. The field was dicing it up out front for sure,
and at times, three and four wide racing wasn’t uncommon.
Dr.
Destruction, Howie Bott took over the lead and held it for
seven laps, when he was passed by Joe ‘Millionaire’ Jentile.
By this time, Richard Petey Ray Fitzgerald and Shawn
Gallucci had all entered the top five.
Ray
Fitzgerald caught and passed Jentile on the twenty-seventh
circuit, then the red flag waived when fluid was dumped in
turn one from contact between Aaron Miller and Casey Pirro.
The third and final red was displayed on lap fifty-six, for
Randy Parsons, who spun on the front stretch and was facing
traffic head-on. Just a lap prior, Petey gave up the fourth
position, as he hit the pits with a flat right rear tire.
The final
ten laps were thrillers for sure. Shawn Gallucci was
running second to Fitzgerald, and Jentile was third.
Jentile was able to get underneath Gallucci and take over
second. With only five laps remaining, Gallucci pulled to
the infield with problems.
When the
checkers flew, it was Fitzgerald, picking up his second
NEETS win of the season. Although he shaved a big deficit
from Fitzgerald’s lead, Jentile didn’t have enough time to
catch the leader. Howie Bott and Richard Petey, who crossed
the stripe third and fourth, were disqualified during post
race inspections. That moved Tim Pauch to third. Mark
Spencer and ‘Speedway’ Phil Lomonaco rounded out the top
five.
The next
NEETS Holiday Stock Car Series event is scheduled for
Monday, September 5th (Labor Day). On the card
for the day is a 105-lap Valley Service four-cylinder
feature, along with a 105-lap Cottman Transmission
6/8-cylinder extravaganza. A big car demolition derby is
also planned to take place during the day’s events. For
