THOMPSON, Conn.
- (Oct. 29, 2005) Jerry Marquis of Broad Brook, Conn.
earned his first Bud Pole Award of the 2005 NASCAR Whelen
Modified Tour season by setting fast time in qualifying for the
World Series of Auto Racing presented by Whelen Engineering &
XTRA/Mart at Thompson International Speedway. Sunday’s 125 lap
event will be the final race of the season.
Marquis toured the 5/8 mile oval in 18.830 seconds for an
average speed of 119.490 mph. Matt Hirschman of Northampton, Pa.
was second fastest with a speed of 119.212 mph. Donny Lia of
Jericho, N.Y., Zach Sylvester of Lebanon, Conn. and Doug Coby of
Milford, Conn. rounded out the Top-5 in qualifying.
The Top-8 qualifiers drew for starting position in Sunday’s
series finale. Tony Hirschman, who trails point leader Ted
Christopher by 36 points, picked the first starting position.
Christopher will start the race in 10th.
Those two drivers are the only ones with a mathematical chance
of winning the championship.
Tony Hirschman will be joined on the front row by his son Matt.
Coby and Jimmy Blewett will make up the second row. Lia will
start fifth and Sylvester sixth. Mike Stefanik, the defending
champion of this event, will start 9th.
