MODIFIED TOUR ENTRIES FLOW INTO THOMPSON

THOMPSON, CT.     With the ICEBREAKER 06 only days away, competitors from the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour are filing entries at a near record rate. New entry blanks for the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour 150 are arriving daily and it appears as though a banner field of NASCAR’s most exciting division will be on hand for the April 8th & 9th season opener.

With many new teams and new cars making up this year’s NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, race fans are in for some thrilling open wheel racing. The ICEBREAKER is the first of five appearances of the “Tour” at Thompson this year.

Even before the season’s first event, NASCAR reports that media members covering the “Tour” have selected Tony Hirschman of Northampton, PA as the favorite to capture the division’s 2006 championship. However, the media was not unanimous in its choice. Six time series champion Mike Stefanik, Ted Christopher, Eric Beers, Jerry Marquis and Chuck Hossfeld all were contenders in the media’s voting. Todd Szegedy, who returns to the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour this year, was also a serious contender in the pole as were Doug Coby, John Blewett, III and Ed Flemke.

Thompson’s ICEBREAKER will set the stage early in the season-long points chase. A top notch performance in the ICEBREAKER can provide an incredible amount of confidence and momentum for a race team in their chase for the division title.

Even though the 150 lap race for the NASCAR Whelen Modifieds is a huge attraction for race fans, the thrills and excitement of the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series (NDWS) will play a major role in the ICEBREAKER presentation. Six divisions of NDWS competition will make for an exciting weekend of auto racing as the brand new season gets underway at Thompson.

Sunoco Modifieds, Pro Stocks, Late Models, Limited Sportsman, Thompson Modifieds and Mini Stocks will provide edge-of-the-seat excitement as these divisions make their 2006 debut at the ICEBREAKER. Many veteran drivers and a host of new competitors will make up these NDWS divisions. These race teams, which make up the heart and soul of Thompson’s weekly race programs, will also be looking for a successful ICEBREAKER outing to kick start their racing season.

Thompson’s pit gates will open at 8 AM on Saturday and 8:30 AM on Sunday. Grandstands will open at 9:30 on both days. Saturdays racing will begin with qualifying at 1:15 PM. Once qualifying has been completed in all divisions, the Sunoco Modifieds and the Late Models will compete in the first of two ICEBREAKER weekend feature races. Sunday’s racing will showcase all seven divisions and will begin at 12 Noon.

Tickets to this traditional season opener are available in advance. Race fans my contact the speedway office to obtain them. (860)-923-2280 All major credit cards are accepted. The complete ICEBREAKER schedule and much, much more may be found on the Thompson web site at www.thompsonspeedway.com
