Christopher Collects First Win Of The Season At Jennerstown

JENNERSTOWN, Pa. —  (June 17, 2006) Ted Christopher of Plainville, Conn. passed Eddie Flemke of Southington, Conn. with just three laps remaining in the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Wheeler Brothers 100 at Jennerstown Speedway and then held off a last lap challenge by defending series champion Tony Hirschman of Northampton, Pa. to secure his first victory of the season. Christopher, making his first start for car owner Eddie Whelan and the Al-Lee Installations Chevrolet race team, started the race in ninth. After dropping back early in the race he moved into the Top-5 on lap 75. When the only caution period of the race occurred on lap 86 Christopher was third behind Flemke, who had led every lap, and Hirschman.
The final restart came on lap 91. Hirschman challenged Flemke for the lead as the trio raced nose to tail. On lap 95, Christopher moved inside Hirschman for second and three laps later passed Flemke for the win. Finishing behind Hirschman and Flemke were Eric Beers of Northampton, Pa. and Donny Lia of Jericho, N.Y.
Unofficially Christopher now leads the series standings with a 30 point margin over Mike Stefanik. Stefanik finished the race in 11th.
Hirschman was the Bud Pole Winner, setting fast time in qualifying. Flemke earned the Featherlite Most Improved Driver Award. Steve Whitt was the recipient of the Powerade Power Move of the Race Award. Jon McKennedy was the rookie of the race.
The next event for the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour is at Thompson International Speedway in Thompson, Conn. on June 29.
