"Welcome Home" Sign Flies At Speedbowl
SK-Modified regulars Chris Pasteryak and Rob Summers head up the Waterford
Speedbowl “Homeboys” making ready for Saturday’s NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour
Whelen 150.
The Speedbowl will have the “Welcome Home” sign out for
a number of competitors with strong hometown resumes. The latter group
includes the popular Ron Yuhas Jr. and Eric Berndt who total 22 SK-Modified
victories between them.
The Whelen 150 is the highlight of a five-feature
program that includes the SK-Modifieds (35 laps), Sportsman (30), Sportsman
(20) and Mini Stocks (20). The action starts with Tour time trials at 5 PM.
Two-time Speedbowl winner Jerry Marquis heads up the
entry list that also includes six-time champ and current point leader Mike
Stefanik, Reggie Ruggiero, Ed Flemke, Chuck Hossfeld, five-time and
defending WMT champion Tony Hirschman and Don Lia. A one-time SK regular,
Flemke also has two Speedbowl Tour wins.
The 2005 Speedbowl SK champion, Summers is an
accomplished time trialer. In addition to three career wins, including one
this year, he has won a number of poles starting with the 2001 WMT spring
event. He’s set fast time twice this year at the Speedbowl and was also
impressive in a SuperModified ride.
Currently among the point leaders, second generation
racer Pasteryak is regularly among the fastest SK competitors. Pasteryak
will be doing double duty.
Ted Christopher has the most impressive “home field”
numbers – 33 SK victories and a championship (1992) to go along with a
Modified Tour win, a Midget win and a host of poles. “TC” has almost a dozen
extra distance Speedbowl wins.
Yuhas (three Fall Finales) and Berndt (two Modified
Nationals) also have established reputations for extra distance prowess. Two
other one-time Speedbowl regulars have impressive stats as well. Ronnie Silk
had a sterling ride to victory (after winning the pole) in the 2004 Pepsi
300. Dennis Charette counts the 2004 Finale among his six Speedbowl wins.
James Civali’s chart includes the 2004 Modified
Nationals. Doug Coby, who scored a Tour win earlier this season, also knows
the way to the Speedbowl’s victory lane.
