Mike Stefanik Takes Bud Pole At Martinsville
Mike Stefanik of
Coventry, R.I. earned his second NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Bud Pole Award
of the 2006 season by setting fast time in qualifying for Saturday’s Made In
America Whelen 300 at Martinsville Speedway. Stefanik, the current point
leader, toured the .526 mile speedway in 18.833 seconds for an average speed
of 100.547 mph.
Former champion Todd Szegedy of Ridgefield, Conn. was second
fastest with a speed of 99.974 mph. Donny Lia of Jericho, N.Y. was third
fastest with a speed of 99.842 mph. Jerry Marquis and Eric Beers rounded out
the Top-5 in qualifying.
The Made in America Whelen 300 is run in conjunction with the
NASCAR Southern Whelen Modified Tour. The fastest three drivers from that
series were: Tim Brown of Cana, Va. who was 12th, L.W. Miller who qualified
13th and Burt Myers who timed 17th.
The fastest 20 drivers transferred to Saturday’s 250 lap
race. The remainder of the starting field will be determined by a 50 lap
qualifying race on Saturday and provisional staring positions. The fastest 8
qualifiers drew for their starting position. Eddie Flemke will start first
and will be joined on the front row by Tony Hirschman. Stefanik will start
the race form the 4th position.
