Reggie Ruggiero Rolls to Victory at Thompson, Mike Stefanik Moves Closer to 7th Series Title

Reggie Ruggiero of Rocky Hill, Conn. drove to his first NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour victory of the season in the World Series of Auto Racing Presented by Whelen Engineering & XTRAMART at Thompson International Speedway. Ruggiero took over the top spot on lap 148 when race leader Ted Christopher and John Blewett, III tangled in Turn-3 following a restart on that lap. Ruggiero then held off Jimmy Blewett of Howell N.J. on a green-white checkered restart which extended the race distance to 160 laps.
It was the 44th career victory for Ruggiero, who drives the Atlantic Sprinkler Chevrolet, and his first since 2004 when he won at Wall Township, N.J. Ruggiero’s last win at Thompson occurred in 1998.
“Nobody seemed to want to win this race tonight, “ said Ruggiero. “I was just glad we were in a position to get it at the end.”
Christopher was credited with 19th position after the lap 148 accident, effectively ending his hopes for his first NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Championship. Mike Stefanik of Coventry, R.I. finished fifth in the race and now leads Christopher by 148 points. Stefanik needs to earn at least a last place finish in the final race of the year at Stafford Springs, Conn. on Oct. 28 to secure his seventh career title.
Stefanik overcame an off track excursion midway through the race Stefanik dropped back to 22nd place but worked his way back to the Top-5.
Eric Sanderson, who owns the Diversified Metals Chevrolet driven by Stefanik, clinched his first NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Owners Championship.
Finishing third was Jerry Marquis who won this race last season. Last week’s winner, Donny Lia of Jericho, N.Y., was fourth.
