The ’06 ABC Car Crushing NEETS Holiday Stock Car Series officially kicked off for the season, Saturday at Mountain Speedway with the running of the third annual ‘Beaters with Heaters’, which is annually sponsored by Drews Enterprises. Combined 144 cars took the green flag for the start of the NEETS season, but in the end it was Joe ‘Millionaire’ Jentile and Mike Mujsce, Jr. grabbing the gold.
From the pole position, Joe Grocholski led the seventy-eight four-cylinder enduro field to the drop of the green flag for 100 laps of action. Only two laps passed by and Jimmy White found himself facing the wrong direction entering turn three. White was in an unsafe situation and the red flag was thrown. When the green waved Woot Lawrence got by Grocholski, along with the father-son duo of Mike Mujsce Jr. and Sr. for third and fourth. The two waged a terrific battle for position. By lap twenty Harry Sager (’05 division champ) moved into the top five.
The next red flew when Dale Shoemaker creamed the outside retaining wall coming out of turn four. Shoemaker was uninjured, but his car was another story. Only two laps later the red flew again for a heavily damaged Gwen Sakowski machine in turn three.
Lawrence held the point and looked like he had the car to beat, but Sager closed in. Unfortunately for Sager, lapped traffic came in play on lap forty and Sager headed pit side to repair damage to his machine.
With seventy-three laps in the books Mujsce, Jr. took control of the event and dropped Lawrence to second. Meanwhile, Grocholski, Robin Vollmoeller and Denise Siegel began their move toward the top five.
With five laps to go Mujsce Seniors’ car went up in flames from underneath. After a stellar run, he retired from the race. However, his son, Mujsce, Jr. held a strong lead over Lawrence and cruised to the win. Grocholski, Joel Lipperini and Siegel rounded out the top five. It was Mujsce’s first win in the series and NEETS career best finishes for Lipperini and Siegel.
Santa Claus appeared at the speedway during the short intermission and gave wrapped toys to all the little boys and girls in the grandstands. The NEETS drivers, family and officials donated the toys. Santa also gave away tee shirts to adults in the stands.
‘Dr. Destruction’ Howie Bott started from the pole in the 6/8 cylinder 100-lap enduro, but by the time lap one clicked off it was Richard Petey in command. Petey held the point until lap six, when he was spun in turn three. Bott assumed the lead. Twelve laps later, ‘Racin Rich Johnson came from his thirty-fifth starting spot and took command of the event. Last seasons’ champion (Joe Jentile) entered the top five after starting in the fourteenth spot.
The red flag flew on lap seventeen when April Makarewicz and Bob Wohlgemuth collected in turn one. Wohlgemuth’s day came to an early end.
Jentile wasted no time getting to the front and taking the lead, which he did after twenty-three laps clicked by. Johnson dropped to second, but later experienced problems and headed to the pits. Tom Moses seemed to be the car on the move and cracked into the top ten and set sights for Jentile. Moses moved into second on lap thirty-eight.
The last of three reds flew forty-four circuits into the race when Eric Wink and another car tangled in turn two. When racing resumed Moses cut Jentile’s lead in half and looked to be on a mission. Moses started last, but made it to the front in a hurry. That was until Moses tagged a car that was stuck against the turn four wall. The damage suffered was enough to drop him in the run-down.
Shawn Gallucci took over second, but was a lap down to Jentile. Jentile cruised to another NEETS win over Gallucci, Keith Bissinger, Gary Walls and Mark Spencer.
Both 100-lap events, including intermission and victory lane interviews were completed in two hours.
NEETS promoter, Billy Bartley noted that the series is currently looking for division sponsors. Anyone interested is urged to contact Bartley at billyb@neetstour.net.
The next ABC Car Crushing NEETS Holiday Stock Car Series event is the ‘Jim’s Busy Bee Pest Control’ April Fools Spring Spectacular on Saturday, April 1st. The races scheduled for the day are the ‘Buzz 100-lappper’ (6/8 cyl) and the ‘Stinger 100-lap event (4 cyl). The new NEETS ‘TRUX’ are also on the card for the day with a special 50-lap truck enduro. Admission is only $7 for ages seven and older. Kids six and under are admitted for free. The NEETS charity of choice for the day is the ‘NO KILL’ Animal Care Association. $1 from each general admission will be donated to the cause.
