WAYNE
ANDERSON TO ENTER
SUFFOLK COUNTY SPORTS HALL OF FAME
Just days
before leaving for a Florida vacation Wayne Anderson of
Yaphank attended a press conference in Patchogue where it
was disclosed he was among the 2006 inductees to the Suffolk
County Sports Hall of Fame. The official induction ceremony
will take place on Monday May 1st.
“This is a great honor for me” Anderson noted upon
returning from his Speedweeks vacation, “it’s an honor to
join Charlie, Fred and Steven as the only Islip Speedway and
Riverhead Raceway drivers in the Suffolk County Sports Hall
of Fame”. Proceeding Wayne into the Hall were the late
“Chargin” Charlie Jarzombek (’95), the late Fred “The Flying
Dutchman” Harbach (’96) and Steven Park (’04). Charles H.
Clark, a Newsday reporter who covered stock car racing at
all the Island short tracks also is in the Hall of Fame
being inducted in 1993.
Anderson was quick to share his honor, “you don’t have
this honor bestowed upon you all by yourself, I have to
thank my father Axle who got me started in 1965 when I was
the Islip Rookie of the Year and my wife Joette who has been
my rock the entire journey”.
Wayne won the Riverhead NASCAR Modified championship
some five times to go along with two Islip Speedway titles
and he along with Charlie Jarzombek and Don Howe are the
only drivers in the 56-year history of the quarter mile oval
to accomplish that fete. Anderson also was the first Long
Island driver to win the NASCAR National Modified title on
the Whelen Modified Tour in 1994.
Barbara and Jim Cromarty owners and promoters of
Riverhead Raceway upon learning of Wayne’s induction said,
“this is a terrific honor for one terrific driver and
person” They added “and as far as his racing resume is
concerned he’s not done yet, at 58 he’s still winning races
and is considered a threat for the 2006 NASCAR Modified
championship”.
Among those joining Wayne Anderson as 2006 Suffolk
County Sports Hall of Fame inductees will be Kevin White,
current Notre Dame Athletic Director and Amityville native
as well the Bellport High School Football program. The
Bellport program has been nationally ranked during five
seasons and has sent 35 players to NCAA Division I programs.
All told some 200 inductees make-up the Suffolk County
Sports Hall Fame including Carl Yastrzemski of the Boston
Red Sox and a Bridgehampton native along with no less than
nine New York Jets Football players.
The 2006 induction ceremony will be held at the West
Lake Caterers in Patchogue and for ticket information visit
