More Hot Action On Another Cool
Evening
The Saturday afternoon seemed like it was going to be a quiet evening,
as car counts weren't up to regular numbers, that we are use to seeing.
But that did not stop the die hard drivers there from putting on a great
night of excitement and pure energy on the track.
The afternoon features started with the Super Pro Trucks. The SPT may
have a small count in trucks with 12 on hand, but with an amazing
talented field, this did not stop from being an exciting race. On the
front row to start the race was #42 Frank Dumicich Jr. and #66 Mike
Albasini, with Frank Jr. taking the lead on Lap 1, as his father Frank
Dumicich Sr. dropped off the pace and into the infield also on lap 1. As
Frank Jr. held the lead Albasini was passed on the outside on lap 4 by
Brigati, Gardner and Turbush. Gardner continued and put major pressure
on Brigati in the turns for second place, but couldn't pass.
On Lap 9 the #32 of Matt Odwazny spun
her around in turns 1 and 2 as the leaders were coming down the front
into turn 1. Leader Frank Jr. had nowhere to go and runs into Odwazny
and loses the lead. Restart on Lap 10 saw Brigati, Gardner, Turbush and
Maestri single file for the green. Gardner continued to put pressure on
Brigati for the lead. On lap 12 Turbush gets bit sideways as Maesti
passes for 3rd. Lap 13 Gardner gets under and races door handle to door
handle and takes the lead out of turn 4. Lap 15 saw Turbush pass Maestri
back fro 3rd on the outside as Gardner pulled away from the pack and
takes the checker flag for the win!
On the bill next was Blunderbust 30 lapper double point race. On the
front row was P.J. Vecchio and "Turbo" Tom Sullivan. Coming off turn 4
the hot rod Lincoln of Sullivan got the jump and takes the early lead
into turn 1. Lap 2 saw Vecchio in his tribute to Woods Brothers car
began to move backward in the pack as Mike Rommeney, Artie Pedersen Jr.,
Dale Arnold get underneath and pass, while Doug Watson takes the longer
route and passes on the outside the next lap. Lap 5 saw Scott Pedersen
#27 squeeze Vecchio in turn 2 put into the wall as he continued to fall
and brought out a caution. Restart he Sullivan and Rommeney battling for
the top spot with Sullivan taking the lead. While Artie looked to get
pass Rommeney the veteran Doug Watson makes it 3 wide and gets
underneath and passes both and bring along with him Tommy Walkowiak, and
Dale Arnold, this made it 3 wide for almost 3 laps. On lap 13 coming out
of turn 2 Doug gets under Sullivan and takes the full lead coming out of
4, as previous laps Walkowiak, Arnold and Artie follow suit. Lap 15 saw
Walkowiak go for the lead out of turn 4 and into turn 1 and out of 2 ,
Arnold is right behind Tommy for second. By Lap 21 The Wild Child plays
in traffic. Lap 23 saw Long Island Jam favorite Scott Sepe spin in turn
3, Lap 24 saw #27 Pedersen shown the black flag, lap 26 #64 Ray Shannon
spin in turn 2, all three incidents never brought out the caution. White
flag Tommy pulling away in traffic and earning the head fought victory.
Charger action was up next, scratched fro the field was #30 Darren
Miller after winning his heat race, he burnt up the clutch. Leading the
pack to green was Brad Van Houten and Brain Doyle. On Lap 1 we saw our
usually first lap caution in the chargers as Joe Oliver, Ralph Beaver
and Jim Donnelley came together in turn 4, also involved was Ed Stein
and Eric Goodale. On the restart Stein is blacked flagged and Van Houten
takes the lead. Lap 2 saw Chris Beutler take 2nd. Lap 5 Chris Turbush
gets pass Doyle and brings along Eric Goodale. Lap 7 saw #88 Frank
Scimeca and #54 Joe Martocchia spin on the back. Lap 8 Joe Oliver spins
it around in turn 1. Lap 9 saw something different as returning #25
Charlie Rittenhouse and #01 Rob Tribuzio lock up on the front and bring
it into the infield, Rittenhouse suffered a flat tire and couldn't
continue until a caution. Lap 12 saw Turbush start to make his move for
2nd but caution was thrown out as Donnelly and Mike Schwarz spin in 4.
Lap 16 saw a major tangle as #88,54,14,24 scramble down the back as we
was Mike Schwarz hit the wall hard as does Scimeca, who hit the pit gate
in 3. Mike Schwarz car looked the worst of damage as his car suffered
front and rear damage, the flatbed was called to haul his car off the
track as Scimeca car was doubled hooked off the track.
During the caution Brad Van Houten might have been experiencing
electrical problems as he pulls his car from the lead into the infield.
Chris Beutler took the lead and remained the leader till the checkers
flew as we saw a first time winner at Riverhead Raceway.
Late Models 50 lapper was next on the bill as we saw Rob Tribuzio step
into Eric Lutz car because his car suffered major damage as a drive
shaft seemed to come through the floor of the car and hit him hard in
the elbow. After the first caution Rob was going to give the seat back
over to Lutz, as he went to the hospital for x-rays. Front of the field
saw #91 Jeremy McDermott and Scott Kulesa lead the pack, Jeremy took the
lead and never looked back. On Lap 8 we saw Tribuzio spin out of 4 and
gets Lutz into the car. Restart saw Jeremy gain control as Jarrod Hayes
follows for 2nd pass Kulesa. Lap 11 Brigati and Roger Oxee pass Kulesa.
Not a lot of passing this night as Jeremy McDermott holds off Hayes for
his first career win! Two for the night!
Modifieds had Rusty Turbush and Ken Heagy on the front row, as Rusty
takes it in turn 1, but caution is thrown as Joe Hartmann gets into Bill
Park as #22X Christiansen hit him head on, not a lot of damage to Park
as 22 looked the worst. Seems Ken Heagy might have scrapped the wall,
the luck doesn't end, but he seemed to be all right. Restart saw a bad
start by Rusty as he falls back and Heagy takes the lead. Lap 2 saw
Veteran Chris Young take the lead from Heagy. Lap 9 saw Bonsignore get
under #6 for 8th and J.R. follows behind. Lap 14 saw J.R. pass Justin
and Denniston and young Justin was right behind him. Lap 21 J.R. outside
Jivanelli for 6th. Lap 22 saw Joe Hartmann hit head on into the wall in
turn 1, the car is done and might need a front clip, Joe seemed alright.
Restart saw 49,33,11,15,93,2 as we had a bad restart as many cars seemed
to brake hard and buckle, but came out turn 4 all right. Lap 23 saw
Denniston car dead in turn 2, which brought out the caution. Lap 24 saw
J.R. try to pass Sal Accardi but got sideways and coming off turn 4 was
Wayne Anderson with nowhere to go, they both got tangled. J.R. had some
words for Wayne, but it totally was a racing incident with nowhere to
go. Laps 24 and 28 saw Justin and Jivanelli battle back and forth for
position. Lap 31 Chuck Steuer got under Heagy for second. Lap 32 Sal
Accardi tried his hand but ended up turning Heagy around and continues
to have bad luck. #5 Vigliarolo Jr. had nowhere to go coming out of turn
2 and ends up into the wall and done for the night. Green White Checker
flag had 49,11,93,12,28 as Young brought it home for his 27th career
Modified win.
Ending the night cap was Figure 8's. The Altar Boy Tom Ferrera and
Michael Brigandi take us to the green as something seemed to go arye in
the Brigandi car, as he hit the wall head on in turn 1 with Slim Jim
behind him, the #13 spun coming out of 2, neither incident brought out a
caution. Lap 5 saw George Sprague start his campaign to pass Kenny Hyde
and takes 2nd. Lap 8 saw Sprague took his campaign a bit further and
took the lead for good with Ferrara looking good all night, hanging with
Sprague the whole race.
9:14, I looked at my watch, 6 divisions and we are out early! Good
times, Great memories!
THE END
