Over one hundred
well prepared cartoon themed enduro machines headed to Mountain
Speedway Sunday for the fifth race of the season in the ABC Car
Crushing NEETS Holiday Stock Car Series. Without a single red flag
in either of the 100-lap events, Joe “Millionaire” Jentile and Joe
Grocholski grabbed the spotlight.
With fifty-two
Steel Seal four cylinders in the field, Bob Belcher led the pack to
the drop of the green. Duane Garrison immediately pounced from his
third starting spot and began to drive off from the field. In the
meantime, Jimmy White, Jr. and Matt Guida began to battle
side-by-side for second.
By lap fifty, Joe
Grocholski moved into second, but was more than a half lap behind
Garrison. White, Guida and Luke Colleran tailed Grocholski
It was only nine
circuits later when Garrison put the third place car a lap down and
it appeared that the race was in the bag for the three time NEETS
winner. However, things changed dramatically with only six laps
remaining. Garrison blew a tire in turns three and four and slapped
the outside wall. Although he was able to continued after quick pit
work, his hopes of victory were dashed.
Also extending his
lead in the division standings, Grocholski (Freeland, PA) came all
the way after starting 50th and cruised to victory with a
lap advantage over White. Guida, Mike Ventura and Bob Darde
completed the top five in the first-ever red flag free NEETS four
cylinder event.
From the pole
position, enduro veteran Richard Petey took command of the
forty-seven cars that entered the Cascioli Roofing 6/8-cylinder
division. Only two laps passed and so was Petey, when Mark Spencer
powered around him and into the number one spot. With a three way
battle up front; Joe Jentile took command of the race three circuits
later.
Jentile began
working lapped traffic at a smooth and steady pace, but Petey didn’t
lay back. At times, Petey and Spencer looked to close in on the
leader when he was in lapped traffic. However, getting through the
same traffic for the second and third place drivers wasn’t an easy
task.
By the halfway
mark, Jentile opened up a straightaway lead over Petey. Spencer
continued in third, while Tim Pauch held fourth after starting 45th.
Shawn Gallucci held the fifth spot.
After racing
side-by-side for at least ten laps, Jentile put the third place car
and also the current division point leader (Pauch) a lap down with
sixty-six laps on the counter. Only Petey remained on the same lap
as Jentile.
Over the remaining
circuits, Jentile (Bedminster, PA)
cruised to the checkers with his eleventh career NEETS win, and also
the record in the NEETS series. Petey came across the strip to
finish second. Pauch, Spencer and Rob Pyle rounded out the top five
in the second red flag free race of the afternoon.
The NEETS charity
of choice for the event was Checkered Dreams, a charity developed to
give seriously ill children a fun filled day at area race tracks.
One Dollar from each general admission will be donated to the cause.
The next ABC Car
Crushing NEETS Holiday Stock Car Series event is the “Labor Day
Junkathon”, which is set for Monday, September 4th. On
the card for the day are the Cascioli Roofing 6/8 cylinders, along
with the Steel Seal four cylinders and NEETS Custom Classic TRUX.
All the action will begin at 2 PM. Grandstand admission pricing is
$7 for ages seven and older. Children six and younger are admitted
for free. The NEETS charity of choice will be announced at a later
date. For all information regarding the NEETS series, please visit
