RIVERHEAD RACEWAY
TO RELIVE THE DAYS GONE BY WITH
OLD TIMERS DAY SUNDAY AUGUST 27TH
It’s time to turn
back the clock on Long Island auto racing Sunday August 27th as the
annual Old Timers Day will be held in the pit area of the Riverhead
Raceway, with the 2006 edition featuring some new twists. All the
story telling and fun will begin at 10:00 am and last into the late
afternoon.
Along with tables full of Long Island racing memorabilia, plenty
of racecars from the days gone by will be back at Riverhead Raceway
and may even see some track time during the day! Slated to make its
first appearance at an Old Timers Day will be the famed Ernie
Wilsberg #5 NASCAR Modified driven by the late, great “Chargin”
Charlie Jarzombek. Prior to Charlie Greg Sacks also saw seat time in
this car which has a rich history not just on Long Island, but in
Modified racing in the Northeast. The car is owned and recently
restored by Eddie Partridge of TS Haulers, who was a big part of the
Jarzombek team for many years.
The #1 offset Coupe of Charlie Jarzombek, along with the modern
day #1 Vega will be on hand again this year. Also new to the 2006
Old Timers Days will be the former Chris Young #49 Maverick Figure
Eight car restored by Artie Schenk of Blast-It Sandblasting which
recently debuted at the track in July.
Other cars expected are the X-3 Vega of Jim Hendrickson, the
X-90 Pinto of Fred Harbach, the #23 of Lou Hennessey, the 8888 Coupe
of Rene Charland and many, many more.
No event of this would be complete without Marty Himes of the
Himes Museum of Auto Racing Nostalgia and indeed the curator of the
Bay Shore based facility will be on hand with many of the cars from
the museum. Marty of course will be wheeling his “Liberty Special”
#250 Mercury around the track.
With no go-kart racing set for the day it’s expected the
racecars will see more track time than in past years and this event
is open to any racecar, be it from Long Island, New England, New
Jersey or anywhere in the Northeast!
Bill Denniston who produces this event has also announced that a
Tow Truck show will be presented, with trophies presented in various
categories during the day. Also an extrication competition will be
held for many Long Island Volunteer Fire Departments to spice up the
afternoon.
So dust off the old Islip Speedway, Freeport Stadium and
Riverhead Raceway photo albums and programs, grab a table and come
out and be part of Long Island auto racing history Sunday August
27th at Riverhead Raceway at the annual Old Timers Day.
