Cool
night of Hot Action
Blunderbusts:
The #6 SPONSORS WANTED Buick of Scott Sepe and the #65 SPONSORS
WANTED Ford of Don Doherty presented a front row of underdogs ready to
take the green. Both would get a good start, with the #6 Scott Sepe
earning the lead by lap 1. #65 Don Doherty would fall back to second
and would contend with the #7 Lakewood Used Auto Parts Lincoln of Tom
Sullivan, along with the #19 Raceway Auto Sales Chevrolet of P.J.
Vecchio. But before the action could get hot and heavy, the first
caution of the day would wave on lap 6 for the #1 Sherwin-Williams
Chevrolet of Artie Pedersen, whom spun in turns 1 and 2.
#6 Scott Sepe and #7 Tom Sullivan would lead the
field to the green, with Sepe getting an excellent start on #7
Sullivan. #65 Don Doherty would quickly reclaim his second spot from #7
Sullivan with the #00 Unique Golf Shop Chevrolet of Tommy Walkowiak
following Doherty’s rear bumper. The next lap Walkowiak would grab
second away from Doherty and set his sights on leader #6 Sepe. However,
Sepe would fight the #00 Walkowiak off, but the #65 Ford of Doherty
would quickly take advantage of the two’s battle and take the lead away
from the both of them followed by the #69x James Becht Builder Chevrolet
of Paul Parisi. Soon thereafter, caution would wave on lap #12, as
everyone’s favorite underdog, #6 Scott Sepe would spin after contact
from the #16 Hammerhead Promotions Chevrolet of Neal Feola, Jr.
#65 Don Doherty and #69x Paul Parisi would lead the
field to green, with the #65 of Don Doherty getting a good start at the
wave of the flag. #00 Tommy Walkowiak and #69x Paul Parisi would do
some hot and heavy battling, and would tangle, with the #69x of Paul
Parisi losing its bumper, bringing out caution once again. Unable to
avoid the bumper, the #4 Pickerell Clam Chevrolet of Tom Pickerell would
run it over and injure his car, resulting in a plume of smoke and liquid
out of his car, causing extensive clean-up to the track.
After a lengthy cleanup, #65 Don Doherty and #00
Tommy Walkowiak lead the field to green, and the #65 Don Doherty would
get a good start. Right behind the two, the #90 Langdon’s Automotive
Chevrolet of Ron Langdon was on the move, and passed the #16 Neal Feola
Jr. for third right after the start. Soon thereafter the action would
take place right up front, going into turn 1, #00 Walkowiak would give a
slight bump to move the #65 Doherty high and #00 Walkowiak took the low
road and the lead. Following Walkowiak through the gap would be the #90
Langdon as well. Langdon would try his best to get around Walkowiak but
the laps would run out, and your Blunderbust victor for the fourth time
this year would be the #00 Unique Golf Shop Chevrolet of Tommy Walkowiak.
Finding himself in a runner-up position, from all the way in 21st
at the start, would be the #90 Langdon’s Automotive Chevrolet of Ron
Langdon. And rounding out the top three would be a good run for the #65
Ford of Don Doherty.
Figure 8’s
The Figure 8’s would see the #64 Dodge of Carl Voelker and the #81
J&R Auto Body Chevrolet of Tim Farrell pace the field before the green.
The #64 of second-generation Voelker would get a good start and the #47
Slim’s Body Piercing Ford of “Slim” Jim Donaldson would sneak his way
into second followed by the #00 Tom Graff. On lap 2 caution would wave
for the #58 Maples Bar & Grill Dodge of Kenny Hyde whom spun in turns 1
and 2 after contact.
A pair of second-generation racers would lead the
field to the green, #64 Carl Voelker, Jr. and #47 “Slim” Jim Donaldson,
but before the green would wave, the #6 of newcomer Stephen Stadler
would lose power and bring out the yellow.
After a brief yellow for the tow, the two
second-generation racers would duke it out at the start. After one lap
of hot and heavy action, #47 “Slim” Jim Donaldson would take the lead
off turn 4. But before we could see some battling, caution would wave
again for a spinning #58 of Kenny Hyde along for debris of the front
bumper of the #81 of Tim Farrell.
The second-generation racer pair of #64 Voelker and
#47 Donaldson would lead the field to the green again, with the #47
Donaldson taking the lead off turn 2, with the #64 Voelker ducking
behind the #47 for second. Lurking behind the two are two savvy
veterans, the #10 Pavco Industries Chevrolet of George Sprague and the
#28 Barrasso & Sons Mason Supply Ford. On lap 10, Voelker would feel
their wrath, and the #10 Sprague would make his move to take second.
While Sprague would set his sights on the lead of #47 Donaldson, lap 15
caution would wave for the tangle between #13 Mike’s Auto Service Ford
of Mike Mujsce, Sr. and the #00 Tom Graff in turn 1. In addition to the
bad turn of fate for the #13 Mujsce and #00 Graff, points contender #10
George Sprague, whom sat comfortably in second, had to pit for a flat
tire.
Going to the green would be the #47 Donaldson
followed by #28 Roger Maynor. When the green waved, Maynor tried every
way imaginable to pass Donaldson in ensuing laps. Finally at lap 18,
Maynor got around the fan favorite #47 “Slim” Jim Donaldson and would
stay there for the win, his third of 2006. Following Maynor would be
two racers whom are starting to chip away at the old regime of front
runners… The #47 Slim’s Body Piercing Ford of “Slim” Jim Donaldson
would take second and rounding out the top three would be the #64 of
Carl Voelker, Jr.
Late Models
The Late Models would see two snake bitten drivers up front, the #10
Ranco Sand & Stone Pontiac of Scott Kulesa and the #88 SPONSORS WANTED
Dodge of Shawn Patrick. At the start, the #88 Shawn Patrick would grab
the lead with Kulesa’s #10 in tow. The two would pace the field, while
trouble would lurk behind. On lap 6, the #39 Helman Group Pontiac of
Roger Oxee would uncharacteristically go around after contact, but got
it going before caution would wave or become lapped. For third place,
the #12 KRI Pontiac of Dennis Krupski and the #99 Chevrolet of Jack
Orlando would do battle, and coming out the mix, the #99 Orlando would
dive underneath the #12 Krupski for third place on lap 10. On lap 14
the first caution would wave for the #37 Sound Shore Irrigation Pontiac
of Bob Baker, as he would spin after contact with the #39 Oxee.
#88 Shawn Patrick and #10 Scott Kulesa would lead
the field to the green, and the two would duke it out. The #10 Kulesa
would find a hole low going into turn 1 a lap after the start, and would
attempt to make a pass, but coming off turn 2, #88 Shawn Patrick and #10
Scott Kulesa would spin together, bringing out the second caution of the
race.
The #99 Chevrolet of Jack Orlando would inherit the
lead followed by the #12 Pontiac of Dennis Krupski and the #23 Chevrolet
of Kevin Metzger and the order would remain the same for a while at the
start. Further back in the pack, #91 B. Sexton Site Development
Chevrolet of Jeremy McDermott would try to make the move on the third
place car of #23 Kevin Metzger, but the #91 McDermott would have to back
off coming off turn 4, and because of letting off would get tapped from
behind causing him to spin head on into the wall under the starter’s
stand, and meeting him there would be the #14 SPONSORS WANTED Pontiac of
Mike Mortimer whom would hit him head on in the right front, bringing
out the third caution.
After the cleanup, the race would resume with the
#99 Jack Orlando in first, followed by the #12 Dennis Krupski and #23
Kevin Metzger. The battle would be for third place, with the #08
Complete Landscaping Pontiac and #72 J&R Steakhouse Pontiac of Greg
Kleila trying to oust the #23 Kevin Metzger out from third, but
unfortunately time would expire, and the winner would be the #99
Chevrolet of Jack Orlando. Coming in second would be a good run for the
#12 KRI Pontiac of Dennis Krupski and rounding out the top three, the
#23 Shadow Racing Products Chevrolet of Kevin Metzger.
Modifieds
Leading the field to the green for the Modifieds would be the next
generation of Modified racers, the #02 Gershow Recycling Chevrolet of
John Denniston and the #28 Long Island Fiber Exchange Chevrolet of
Justin Bonsignore. At the green, Denniston would get a good start, and
the #28 of Bonsignore would be right behind him. However, before any
dueling could take place caution would wave on lap 4 for the spun #20
Smithtown Nissan Chevrolet of Bill Park, whom spun after contact with
the #5 Nicolock Pavers Chevrolet of Frank Vigliarolo, Jr.
#02 John Denniston and #12 Dunkerley’s Office
Products Chevrolet of Dan Jivanelli would lead the field to the green,
and Denniston would grab the lead once again, followed by the #93 Ideal
Cesspool Chevrolet of Sal Accardi, Jr. Caution would wave once again on
lap 5 for the #3 Sap Enterprises Chevrolet of Dennis Krupski and the #03
SPONSORS WANTED Chevrolet of Ken Darch whom tangled in turns 1 and 2.
#02 Denniston and #93 Accardi restart the race,
with the #02 Denniston getting the immediate lead, but caution would
wave once again one lap later on lap 6 for the tangle between the #0
Mercury of Dave Brigati and the #28 of Justin Bonsignore in turn 4.
With the onslaught of caution after caution, a
single file restart was ordered, with the #02 Denniston leading #93
Accardi. At the green, #93 Accardi would be right on Denniston’s rear
bumper, and would pass him for the lead. Unfortunately the #02 of John
Denniston would suffer a mechanical malady, coming to a stop in turn 3
bringing out the caution once again.
On the restart the #93 Accardi would lead the #36
SPONSORS WANTED Chevrolet of Dave Sapienza, and Accardi would remain in
the lead at the wave of the green with Sapienza trying his all to find a
way to pass. On lap 13 caution would wave again for the spun #12 of Dan
Jivanelli.
#93 Accardi would lead the #36 Sapienza and the
rest of field to the green once again, with the #36 Sapienza trying his
all for his second career win. Meanwhile behind the two, the #2 Gershow
Recycling Chevrolet of J.R. Bertuccio has been slicing through the
field, and took the #15 Insula Dome Skylights Chevrolet of Wayne
Anderson on the outside to take the third place position.
Lap 22 caution would wave again for the #11x Savin
Copiers Chevrolet of Chuck Steuer whom blew a line sending fluid all
over turn 1 and 2, causing the #20 Bill Park, #6 Riverhead Auto Mall
Chevrolet of Tom Rogers Jr., #03 Ken Darch, and #5 Frank Vigliarolo, Jr.
to spin as well.
The field would restart again with the #93 Accardi
- #36 Sapienza tandem up front, with the #2 of J.R. Bertuccio in the
hunt. The #36 of Sapienza would continuously tap on Accardi’s door, but
Accardi would keep it shut to earn himself his second win of 2006, and
his third career-overall in the #93 Ideal Cesspool Chevrolet.
#36 Dave Sapienza would have to be content with
runner-up, and the #2 Gershow Recycling Chevrolet of J.R. Bertuccio is
back, coming all the way from 15th to a third place finish.
Car Rollover Contest
The Car Rollover Contest would see four competitors trying to get
their roll on. Blunderbust competitor and Rollover newcomer, William
Schwarz would get his roll on for three attempts, worth 6, 5, and 2
points each attempt, for a total of 13 points. Next up would be former
Blunderbust competitor, Dennis Scott whom would get rolls of 2 and 6
points, worth 8 total points. Thaddeus Lattanzio would be next to grace
the ramp, and would earn rolls of 0, 0, and 3 points for a disappointing
3 points for the Rollover veteran. Next up would be Charger owner and
sponsor in multiple-divisions, Bud Sexton, whom would get rolls of 5, 0,
and 2 points for a total of 7 points. The winner would be newcomer
William Schwarz.
Spectator One-on-One Drag
In what was possibly the most cheered on race of the whole night,
the Spectator Drags brought out 13 entries. Brian Pallone in his
undefeated Honda Civic, former Modified crewmember Scott Setek in a Ford
Taurus, an unidentified Pontiac Firebird, former Charger driver, Brian
Schwarz in a Chevrolet Malibu, Mike Balone in a huge Chevrolet C-3500
pickup, former Modified crewmember Jon Parsons in a Chevrolet Blazer,
Billy Hannigan with a hand control Chevrolet Blazer, Dwayne Sipila in a
1985 Chevrtolet Monte Carlo, Mark Correro in a 1985 Chevrolet Monte
Carlo, Mike Schlaugies returning from retirement in his classic Pontiac
LeMans, Mike Kira in a Dodge Neon SRT, Don Carisiti in a Pontiac
Firebird, and Bud Sexton in a 2006 Lotus. The action was hot and heavy
and it would wind up with the unlikely Jon Parsons in his Blazer versus
Brian Pallone in his undefeated Honda Civic, and Pallone would easily
win again. However, Spectator Drag veteran, Mike Schlaugies would
challenge Brian Pallone to a duel. Pallone agreed and the two would
duke it out, with Schlaugies making contact with Pallone in turn 3,
causing Pallone nearly to back end his Civic into the turn 3 wall.
Schlaugies once again took the checkers, and the battle of new and old
is for sure to continue again some day in the near future.
