RIVERHEAD NASCAR MODIFIED AND LATE MODEL TITLES TO BE DECIDED
SEPTEMBER 9th
The 2006 NASCAR
Dodge Weekly Series Modified and Late Model champions will be
determined Saturday night September 9th when those two classes run
their final races of the season. The NASCAR Modifieds will go out in
fine fashion with a 50-lap, double point event while the Late Models
run a 25-lap main event with single points.
Several drivers remain in the 2006 NASCAR Modified title chase
as of August 25th with former champion Chuck Steuer of Bohemia
leading defending champion Bill Park of Manorville and Sal Accardi
Jr. of Deer Park among others. Also still in the hunt are former
five-time champion Wayne Anderson of Yaphank, Chris Young of
Calverton, Dave Sapienza of Riverhead and Dan Jivanelli of Hampton
Bays.
The 50-lap tilt will be preceded by time trials, which will be
the qualifying format for the night. It’s the first time in many
years a double point race will usher the potent machines into the
off-season, but it surely will quench the thirst of fans of these
open wheel gladiators.
The Late Model championship chase is a tight fight as well with
“Mighty” Mike Mortimer of Mastic Beach leading slightly over Greg
Kleila of Lindenhurst as of press time. Also in the mix are Dave
Brigati of Calverton, defending champion Roger Oxee of Peconic, Dan
Turbush of Riverhead, Jeremy McDermott of Riverhead and Massapequa
talent Kevin Metzger .
Joining the show will be the Doug Wholey’s Ideal Cesspools night
Charger feature, Figure Eights and Blunderbusts. All three of those
races will be 20-laps in distance.
Riverhead Raceway officials announced on August 19th that the
September 16th show for the Figure Eights, Chargers and Blunderbusts
would be points paying events for the first time since their
inception. This decision was made in part due to three lost shows
due to rain earlier in 2006, but from 2006 out the races will become
points paying races rain-outs or not! The Super Pro Trucks and a
Full Size School Bus Demolition Derby and the Miler Lite National
Demolition Derby championship will join the three feature races.
