Race fans on Long Island
received an early Christmas present recently when Barbara and Jim
Cromarty announced that the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour would indeed be
on the 2007 schedule visiting the quarter mile facility on Saturday
evening August 4th. That, along with other 2007 Riverhead Raceway
schedule adjustments, was announced Wednesday.
Just the announcement that the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour was
returning to Riverhead in ’07 after not appearing on the original slate
was great news for the Riverhead faithful, but when the qualifying
format was disclosed the news got that much better. Two qualifying races
of 60-laps each will be run to determine the starting line-up for the
70-lap main event where the WMT championship points will be awarded.
Miller Lite will return as sponsor for the event that is being tabbed a
“Flash” tour event, the last of three on the 2007 WMT trail. Wall
Township Speedway and Twin State Speedway will both host similar type
“Flash” tour events prior to the Miller Lite race at Riverhead.
The August 4th Miller Lite NASCAR Whelen Modified “Flash” Tour
program will also include a 30-lap Charger main event with double
points, Blunderbust racing and One-On-One Spectator Drags. The Late
Models and Figure Eights who were scheduled to race on that night before
the return of the WMT will now have the night off.
Other schedule adjustments include the Enduro program from Sunday
August 5th now being moved back to Sunday August 12th with the first
Sunday in August now reserved as a rain date for the WMT.
Drifting fans will be happy to see that there will be five Sunday
Drifting Shows being presented starting with Sunday April 29th which
will be followed by Drifting Shows on May 20th, June 24th, July 15th and
August 19th. A Drifting Demonstration will be presented on Saturday July
28th.
Gone for 2007 will be the Monster Trucks who used to perform on
Labor Day weekend, taking their place on Saturday of that doubleheader
weekend will be the first Full Size School Bus Demolition Derby of 2007,
which was originally set for August 18th.
