Blast
from the Past - Ernie Maynor's #82
by J.A. Ackley
It’s been nearly 25 years since we last saw Ernie
Maynor’s legendary #82 Figure 8 racecar, and now it’s coming back thanks
to Artie Schenk. Schenk, who’s previous project was the #49 Ford
Maverick of Chris Young, has been busy at work with his newest project.
However, with most of the bodywork complete, Schenk is looking for an
auto body shop willing to donate time and supplies to bring back this
legendary car to former glory.
Schenk, a Figure 8 enthusiast, has been involved
with Figure 8’s for the majority of his life. He sponsors the #74
Figure 8 car of Carl Baxter through his business – Blast-It
Sandblasting. In addition, he’s the lead wrench on 5-time Figure 8
Champion and all-time Riverhead winningest driver, Roger Maynor. Thus,
his current project has even more meaning, as the #82 Figure 8 is the
steed which led Roger’s father, the late Ernie Maynor to many victories
at Islip Speedway.
Ernie Maynor competed at the venerable Islip
Speedway from the mid-1960’s to the early 1980’s. While Maynor would
never earn a championship, he would amass many victories, and would win
over the hearts of many Figure 8 fans and competitors. Tragically,
Maynor would pass away on May 1, 1982 in a Figure 8 accident. While we
lost one of our favorite stars, his star still shines bright, and now
his old ride is just about ready for a comeback.
Artie Schenk is looking for an auto body shop which
is willing to donate time and supplies to complete the legendary #82
figure 8 racer. Interested auto body shops can contact Artie by
e-mailing him at
figure849@aol.com or calling him at (631) 484-2215.
Schenk is hoping to complete the car, so that it
may ride again as the pacecar for the Ernie Maynor Memorial figure 8
race and lead the pack as it did so many times years before. So if you
can lend a hand, be sure to contact Artie, and make history come alive
once again.
