Kart Racing is Back!

This past Sunday, April 1,
was opening day for go-kart racing at Riverhead Raceway. There was a pretty
good turnout for opening day, considering the chilly and rainy weather in
the afternoon. This year besides having the quarter-mile oval track, there
is a new inside flat track. Anyone who ran Medford Raceway years ago would
appreciate having a new flat track to race on. According to Kevin Orlando,
who practiced on the new flat track the past couple of weekends, he said
that it is going to lead to some fast and competitive racing.
However, this past Sunday only 2 out of the 15 classes used the flat track
for their main event. At the drivers meeting earlier in the day, it was
announced by EKRA track officials that in upcoming weeks more classes will
be using the flat track. Unfortunately in the afternoon the rain came back
and the Junior Champ Animal and Senior Champ over 35 features were canceled.
At the next karting event, before the start of the second race of the
season, these two classes will run their main events, followed by the
regular races for the day.
