Ernie Maynor’s #82 to Get
Painted Thanks to Jam Fan

A few weeks ago, Artie Schenk
posted a public plea on our site for help in painting and restoring the
legendary #82 of Ernie Maynor. Many visitors contacted Schenk about the
car, but one visitor stepped up to the plate. When Bob of Marrzmotorports
heard about the deal, he knew he wanted to get involved and help see one of
his childhood heroes’ favorite rides grace the figure 8 racetrack one more.
And thanks to his boss, John Canty of Commack Towing, and the auto body shop
they manage, Combined Auto Collision, that dream will happen.
Bob, a long-time Ernie Maynor
fan was more than happy to get the ball rolling. “Ernie would always make
time to talk with his fans, sign autographs and tell a story or two,” Bob
recalled, “Just an all round great guy, you always knew whenever Ernie raced
it would always be an exciting race to watch.”
After reading the story on
LongIslandJam.com, Bob would call Schenk to see what was needed on the car
to get it ready for the Ernie Maynor Memorial later this season. Schenk
would inform him that basic bodywork need to be completed and the car would
need to be painted. After swapping a few stories, Bob would tell him that
he will try to find someone to help finish the car, not an easy task as this
is the time of the season where most teams and auto body shops are working
to get their own cars ready for the impending race season.
After a few phone calls and
no luck in sight, Bob would finally ask the last person he thought would help
out, his boss, John Canty. Bob by day is a tow-truck driver for Canty’s
Commack Towing. Canty also manages his family’s body shop in East Northport
– Combined Auto Collision. Bob would inform Canty about the situation and
the need for someone to step up to the plate to finish the job in time for
the Memorial race. Oddly enough it didn’t take much, as Canty asked for
Schenk to give him a call. And in a few minutes, the deal was done.
John Canty and Combined Auto
Collision have agreed to take on the job and provide the time and supplies
for the #82 Ernie Maynor car gratis. Canty thinks the project is a worth
cause, especially since it revolves around someone so integral to the
history of Long Island Racing.
Artie Schenk would like to
thank all those who have tried to help out, and especially Bob of Marrzmotorports for the lead and John Canty of Combined Auto Collision.
In a few months, Ernie
Maynor’s legendary #82 will once again cross the X, a feat for which many
fans to this day loved seeing.
