Barrasso & Sons to Present Maynor Memorial
June 23
Riverhead Raceway officials
announced today that Barrasso & Sons Mason Supplies of Islip Terrace will
again sponsor the annual Ernie Maynor Memorial Figure Eight race on Saturday
evening June 23rd. A full card of NASCAR Whelen All-American Series racing
as well a Mini School Bus Figure Eight and 8-Cylinder Demolition Derby are
also on tap.
As hard as it is to imagine the 2007 season marks the 25th Anniversary
that the Figure Eight division lost one of its most colorful characters and
talented drivers in Ernie “The Wrench” Maynor on that fateful night in May
of 1982 at Islip Speedway. Riverhead’s Bob Finan recalled, “Ernie was a gem
on and off the track. He gave a hand and advice to anyone who ever asked and
did he ever love to tell stories, not just about racing, but hunting and
bowling as well” He earned the nickname “The Wrench” because of his prowess
as a mechanic.
Finan noted, “we are so very pleased that Michael Barrasso and his
company are again backing this race, they have been a marketing partner at
Riverhead Raceway since 1990 and aside from Miller Lite are probably our
longest running sponsor”.
Mike Mujsce of Westhampton Beach is the defending race winner of the
Ernie Maynor Memorial and he’ll be seeking a repeat on June 23rd, but
drivers like Roger Maynor, Tom Kraft, Ken Hyde, Bill Steen, Tom Ferrara and
Tom Graff all have other ideas about who will win this significant race.
Artie Schenk, long time team member of Roger Maynor’s team is currently
restoring the Dillahunt Roofing #82 Vega that Ernie
The Wrench” Maynor drove at his Blast-It Sandblasting shop and hopes to have
the car ready for the June 23rd event to serve as the pace car.
