Mission Accomplished
What a great weekend for 5J's Motorsports. We traveled to Mountain Speedway
in Hazelton, PA over the weekend to perform test and tune and to get our
feet wet in some Late Model competition. We rented the track on Saturday and
Joe fell into the groove of this track almost immediately. Joe stayed within
3 tenths of a second of the fastest late model cars that were out for the
same reason as we were. That really fortified Joe's confidence in our new
car. We felt that our time was well spent and we had accomplished what we
set out to do.
On race day we did some practice and found that we were still in the
ballpark from the day before. We were able to run with the big boys and keep
their pace without any problems.
During the first heat race We had to start in the rear because we were the
new kid on the block. A quick yellow flag on lap 5 enabled Joe to move into
5th place. He lost one position on the restart and then maneuvered the # 35
into the 3rd spot. Then with some patient and skillful driving, he moved
into second place and my heart felt like it was in my throat. At this point,
I thought we might eek out a heat win to start our new season in this new
series. Things seemed even brighter for a victory when the leader lost it on
the last lap, but the caution flag had come out before his spin and they
gave him his spot back. Close, but no banana.
For the feature race we were slated to start in the seventh position
but elected to move to the rear of the pack because of our "Yellow Bumper"
status, we moved to the rear of the pack of 13. There were 3 cautions
early in the race and this allowed Joe to move up few spots. Later he passed
a few more and had to settle with an overall 7th place finish for our first
competitive race in this series.
The "Wreck Monkey" stayed in the stands and we came away unscathed with no
scratches to mend this coming week. Foremost, we finished on the lead lap of
the feature event and are confident that we are going to run well in this
new league.
5J's would like to pass on accolades to our friends Kenny Vogel, Jr. and Wes
Wagner. Kenny piloted his True Value Modified to his first Top Ten Finish
and Wes won his heat and feature race in Mini-Cups.
