Garden
State Vintage Stock Cars to Join Riverhead June 9
For the first time in their
16-year history the Garden State Vintage Stock Car Club will be visiting
Long Island Saturday evening June 9th for a display and exhibition at
Riverhead Raceway. The GSVSCC will join a six division NASCAR Whelen
All-American Series program that will feature Ideal Cesspools night for the
Late Models with a 50-lap main event.
Founded in 1991 by Ray Shea and Bill Erbe the GSVSCC can usually be
found visiting race tracks in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Off season they
can be found at trade and mall shows but this is the first time they’ll tow
east of New York City, Ray Shea however is no stranger to Riverhead as in
2005 he brought the “Tiger” Tom Baldwin #7 coupe to Riverhead for the first
77-lap memorial run in Tom’s honor. The club is expected to both display and
take some laps around the quarter mile oval and be joined by some cars from
previous times in Long Island stock car racing as well.
Ideal Cesspools, one of two seasonal sponsors for the Late Models will
host their night at the races and the class will contest their second double
point race of ’07 in a 50-lap event. Jarrod Hayes of Calverton scored the
win in the first such race on May 12th and he along with defending LM
champion Greg Kleila of Lindenhurst will bear watching in this race. Also
out for victory will be the likes of “Mighty” Mike Mortimer, Peter “Buzzy”
Eriksen, Roger Oxee and Kevin Metzger.
Also going to post in their second double points race of 2007 are the
Figure Eights with Roger Maynor of Bay Shore trying to defend his May 12th
win in the Cromarty Cup 25. Out to beat Maynor to the checkers in this
25-lap tilt are defending champion Tom Kraft, Ken Hyde, Tom Graff, Tom
Ferrara, Paul Specht and Mike Mujsce.
Filling out the busy card of racing will be the NASCAR Modifieds,
Chargers and Blunderbusts with the “Mod Squad: going 35-laps, while the
Chargers and Blunderbusts go 20 circuits.
Time trials for the Late Models will start qualifying at 4:00 pm, with
heat races to follow and feature racing to start at 5:30. For more info call
