The Future
of Racing is Now in the EKRA
by Danielle McCormack
Even with a few EKRA go-kart
competitors away at the regional race in New Hampshire, there was still a
great crowd on hand at Riverhead Raceway. To make the racing even more
interesting this past Sunday, several drivers from Riverhead Raceway’s
Saturday Night Whelen All American Series returned to their roots, to race
in the EKRA.
Modified driver, Mike
Andrews, Jr., was behind the #27 Senior Champ kart and was having a blast
turning the wheel as he did a few years ago. Andrews ran tracks such as
Westhampton, Medford, Riverhead, as well as a few regional and national
events and won many races along the way.
In addition to Andrews,
Justin Bonsignore, another Modified regular, drove in the Lite Class in the
# 2. Justin was subbing for Dean Grunert, who was away at the Regional race.
Justin has several go-kart championships ranging from the local ranks to
national and regional ranks. Bonsignore currently drives the #28 Double
Diamond Realty Chevrolet in the NASCAR Modified division Riverhead Raceway
and in the past drove Chargers as well.
Last but not least, we have
Kevin Orlando, who wheeled the #99 go kart in the Lite class. Orlando is a
racer’s racer, who loves to get behind the wheel of anything that can race.
Orlando was a strong competitor in the kart ranks, winning wherever he
went. Orlando was known to be a threat to win, especially if he was behind
you on the last lap. On Saturday nights, you can catch Orlando in the #99
Neat & Complete Drywall Dodge in the Riverhead Charger division. In his
first year out, Orlando took the checkers, and this year he looks to be
returning to victory lane once again.
For those who watch the EKRA
now, you may be seeing the future flash before your eyes. The next Andrews,
Bonsignore, Orlando is winning now and in the near future they could be
winning as well, but under the Saturday Night lights of Riverhead Raceway.
