EKRA, Now
EEKR, Presents Race #7
by Danielle McCormack
The former
EKRA is now known as East End Kart Racing (EEKR). The organization, led by
acting President
Dave Brigati, elected
to change the name last week. The members of the club thought it would be a
good idea to start out fresh with a new name and officials. It was accepted
by the club with no hesitation. Even with a rain delay there was still a
great crowd of karters on hand to race this past Sunday. They were able to
get practice in but not the heat races. As result, the starting orders for
the heat races applied towards the features. All the main races went off
without a hitch and some great racing took place. Even with the delay they
were still able to finish early enough for everyone to get home and have a
great time to go swimming and/or have a BBQ.
WPW
Growers donated
four go-kart tires to the
EEKR for
the winners of four selected classes. Each week there will be some kind of
prize given out by
WPW Growers
to winners of other selected classes. Prizes could include
anything from tires, fuel, gloves, rims and other items needed for go-kart
racing. We want to thank
WPW Growers
for coming on board to help
EEKR
go-kart racers at Riverhead Raceway. It is nice to see a local
company getting involved in doing something good for kids. The winners of
the tires this week are: Junior Sportsman Champ A – Artie Tappan III, Junior
I – Kyle Soper, Junior II – Alexa Orlando, and Junior Champ – Brian Hansen.
In the
growing list of improvements, the EEKR has acquired a set of digital scales
to use for the go-kart racers at Riverhead. Instead of picking up your
go-kart on to the scale, go-karters can simply drive up onto the scale, get
weighted then drive right off, which saves the backs on many.
Not
scheduled but added by a vote this pasted Sunday. There will be a race for
EEKR members on August 19, 2007. Gates
will open at 7:30 AM with a drivers meeting to follow at 9:30 AM. For
Senior Champ and Lite Classes there will be added bonuses to the winners,
along with the regular prizes. So if you run in either of these two classes
I would make sure my equipment is in good working order, because the prize
could be unbelievable.
In other announcements,
the EEKR has appointed Joe Orlando as Vice-President of the organization.
Orlando has been a long supporter of go-kart racing and should help further
the organization in the right direction.
Visiting
from Ohio, young
Matt Landgren
got a real thrill this past Sunday. He got a chance to take a couple of
laps around Riverhead in
CJ Zukowski’s
#3 Novice
racing go-kart. CJ was nice enough to offer Matt the ride. Matt was a
little nervous at first, so before he got on the track he took a lap around
the pit area. After trying out the go-kart in the pit area Matt felt that
he could race on the track. Matt was scheduled only to take 3 laps but,
CJ's father Charlie saw that Matt was doing fine and let him run a few extra
laps. We want to thank
Dave Brigati
acting president of EEKR, Charlie Zukowski, and his son CJ for doing
something wonderful for Matt, who was visiting New York and Riverhead
Raceway. On the drive home, Matt could only talk about racing on the track
in the go-kart and what a great experience he had. This made his vacation
to New York something special to remember for the rest of his life.
