EEKR Race #8 - The Field Grows
by Danielle McCormack
This past Sunday afternoon presented mild weather in the mid 70's. Despite
this past weekend's race being a late add-on to the schedule, the club had
a great turn out of go-karters at Riverhead Raceway for EEKR. The pits were
full with many of the regular go-karters, as well as a few old faces in
attendance that haven't been at Riverhead for quite some time. Two in
particular were the father and son team of Steve and Eric Hersey.
With the advent of Eric going off to college this coming week, his
father Steve asked him what would he like to do with his last weekend here
before leaving for college in Upstate New York. Eric's reply was if they
are racing go-karts at Riverhead, he wanted to race. It just so happens
that there was a race scheduled that he could attend. They didn't know what
to expect knowing that the last time they raced there were different people
in charge and also different name to the club.
They got to the track and had found out that the name had changed to
Eastern End Kart Racing (EEKR) along with a new president with Dave Brigati
and new officials. As the day went on they were pleasantly surprised how
calm everyone was and how pleasant they were. The atmosphere was totally
different from what they remember, the last time they raced.
At the end of the day they knew that they had made the
right decision to come out and race during Eric's last weekend before going
off to college. In a phone conversation with Eric and Steve, they stated
when Eric is off next summer they will be running as regulars with EEKR.
They hope all the new officials keep up the good work, not only to make him
come back but other go-kart racers that have been gone for a while.
