It's hard to believe that the Riverhead Raceway Awards Dinner
has come and gone, and that it's been more than a month since
the gates closed on the 2007 season. As the still
relatively new Managing Editor here at LongIslandJam.com, I am
introducing an offseason news and notes column, designed to
bring fresh news to the Jam on a monthly basis during the
winter, and to help us all keep up on the happenings in our
local racing community. Everyone is invited to contribute
any news of interest. I can be reached via email at
tchirico@longislandjam.com. So, here goes...
I have received word from Artie Schenk, crew chief on Roger
Maynor's #28 Figure 8 car, that he has purchased George Brown's
coupe from the late 80s or 90s, with plans to restore the car.
In order to complete the restoration project, though, he is in
need of a 6 cylinder motor, as well as pictures of the car when
it was painted yellow with flames. If anyone can help out,
you can reach Artie through the Jam forum; his member name is
figure849. Artie currently also has Chris Young's Maverick
and Ernie Maynor's Vega.
In other news related to Roger Maynor, Artie tells us that
the team will be busy during the offseason freshening up Roger's
Figure 8 car so that he can come back in 2008 and defend his
title. As always, Roger is sure to be a force to be
reckoned with. It is reported that Roger will also run
select shows at Mountain Speedway with the Late Model in 2008.
The Jam has been informed that Terry Stiles sold his 4/6
cylinder Enduro truck to Jim White, crew member and sponsor on
Tommy Walkowiak's #00 Blunderbust car. White has already
run the truck, winding up with a 3rd place finish in the final
rundown at the NEETS Frankenduro TRUX race at Mahoning Valley
Speedway.
According to Terry, his plans are to concentrate on his
Blunderbust efforts in 2008. His #41 will have a new power
plant, with an Elsasser engine under the hood. The tranny
will be from FB Performance. Terry is currently seeking
sponsors for his 2008 effort. In spite of only starting
five features in 2007, Terry clocked in with the 6th fastest
time during the season-ending time trial Blunderbust race in
September. It should be interesting to see what he can do
running a full-time schedule.
Those of you who live in the Copiague area may have noticed a
new weekly community newspaper in your mailboxes, Copiague Weekly. This paper comes to you from Ralph Soluri,
driver of the #4 Grand Enduro car. Ralph has taken on numerous
successful business ventures in the past, and he aims to do the
same with his newspaper. He handles every aspect of the
business, from selling advertising space, to writing stories, to
weighing them and delivering them to the post office. All
residents of Copiague receive the paper each week free of
charge. If you don't live in Copiague and would like to check
the paper out, you can view it online at
www.copiagueweekly.com.
We at LongIslandJam.com wish Ralph the best of luck!
As most of you already know, there have been a few additions
to the racing community in past weeks. Congratulations,
which have been extended by many through the forum, go out to
the Turbush family, as well as the Scott family. In
October, Rich and Maryann Giordano also welcomed a daughter into
the world.
There are several upcoming events of interest. This
coming Sunday, November 11th, is the NEETS "Mutha" Enduro race
at Mahoning Valley Speedway. Full details are available on
the NEETS web site at
www.neetsracing.com. Also coming up is the National
Parts Peddler 28th Annual Trade Show and Racers Auction.
The event will be held November 16th through 18th in the Verizon
Center of Progress building at the New York State Fairgrounds in
Syracuse. Hours for the show are noon to 10 pm Friday, 10
am to 8 pm Saturday and 10 am to 3 pm Sunday. More details
can be obtained by calling (315) 699-7583 or visiting
www.partspeddlernews.net. Although it is a few months
away and there will certainly be reminders beforehand, make sure
you mark your calendars for Sunday, January 27th if you plan to
attend the annual Riverhead Raceway informational driver's
meetings. The meetings will be held downstairs at the
Polish Hall in Riverhead, and we will post the time schedule for
the day right here on LongIslandJam.com when it becomes
available.
With that, I will conclude the inaugural edition of the
offseason news and notes. It is my hope that those of you
in the racing community with news to share will continue to, so
that we may bring you news of interest throughout the winter.
