2007 Riverhead Raceway Charger Grade Report
by "Bullfather" Peter Milano

1) John Ellwood
#17x Lolly's Hut Pontiac

Ellwood was on a mission from God! All Ellwood needed was to have "Joliet" Jake Blues by his side for this mission, but John Ellwood still completed his mission for the 2007 Charger championship. Taking a quote from The Blues Brothers movie, Elwood Blues turned to his brother Jake: "They're not gonna catch us. We're on a mission from God." It seemed halfway into the season John Ellwood had his mission in sight and kept pushing until his goal was met. Taking home 3 wins, 11 top 5s, and 13 top tens earned him the right to be called a champion. After a few years of being an owner, he set out to be full time driver in 2006. John looked strong all season and even had fellow Charger drivers claiming it was going to be hard to take the title this season with the year Ellwood had!

A+
14 races, 3 wins, 11 top 5s, 13 top 10s

2) Kevin Orlando
#
99 Neat & Complete Dodge

Orlando finished 70 points behind and one race short! Kevin Orlando missed the first race of the season because his car was not ready in time. It could have been the difference of keeping Ellwood from claiming the title this past year. The former multi-time karting champion has gone winless the past two years, after his rookie season saw him winning two races. The one thing that seemed to get to Kevin in 2006 was patience! Moving forward to 2007, Kevin had 10 top 5s in 13 races. I've heard lots of drivers praise the season Kevin had behind the wheel. Kevin continued to grow this season, learning that patience and time will come over the course of time and so will the next win! Because of this hard season of not having the car ready in time and missing a race. B+ (He would have gotten the A-)

B+
13 races, 0 wins, 10 top 5s, 13 top 10s

3) Chris McGuire
#
89x Gershow Recycling Ford

McGuire hits one out of the park, but falls short of winning the game! At the beginning of the season, I would have sworn we were seeing a new Chris McGuire. His machine seemed fast and his mental game was on top. It made for a dangerous combination to his fellow
drivers. Chris McGuire looked to be the one who was going to dominate 2007! Chris garnered a win early in the year and was strong for most of the season. Towards the end of the year,
it seemed hard times and hardship were coming his way. His game seemed off towards the end and he wasn't driving with the same confidence he had in the beginning of the year. He did have 6 top 5s and 10 top tens in 14 races. It wasn't a bad year at all for Chris. If he can come back with a renewed confidence in 2008, he will be a strong force!

A-
14 races, 1 win, 6 top 5s, 10 top 10s

4) Chris Turbush
#
81 Spano Floors Pontiac

All that he was looking for was always inside him! The 2007 season could have been truly ugly for Turbush. It seemed like 2007 could have been his even before the season started since many were claiming he was the one to beat! However, Chris started the season on the wrong foot. Chris was ashamed of being found with traction control in his car. Was it the shame of having it or getting caught with it? Either way, Chris was humbled by the experience. He didn't want his fans and friends thinking he was cheater and that he had to cheat to gain a win. With the embarrassment behind him, Chris had his sights set and was looking to get back in the saddle and riding towards victory lane. It seemed towards the end of the season the driver we expected to dominate was here! But for the infraction of having traction control, his grade got knocked down

B-
14 races, 3 wins, 9 top 5s, 10 top 10s

5) Tom Anderson
#
23 Mike's Place Chevrolet

"As you can see, we've had our eye on you for some time now, Mr. Anderson." -Agent Smith from The Matrix.
I’ve got to admit before the season started, I missed one driver from the top 5 as soon as I made my predictions, then Tom Anderson’s name popped into my head! How could I forget him? It seemed like he had a strong finish to 2006, and it could have rolled into 2007! Some races it seemed like Mr. Anderson was going to take it all. He did gain a win this year, with 5 top 5s and 9 top tens. He had some bad timing or ‘just so luck’ go away towards the end of the  season. He was in a few hard wrecks and a lot of time had to go into working on his car. But his efforts were not for naught, as he gained a ton of respect from his fellow competitors for his dedication!

B+
14 races, 1 win, 5 top 5s, 9 top 10s

6) Shawn Solomito
#
66 Riverhead Bldng. Sply. Chevy

The rookie didn't race like a rookie! It seemed as the season progressed, Shawn Solomito looked more and more impressive. One incident on the track with Daryn Miller could have really cost him his season. Shawn is a well-liked guy in the pits and seems to respect a lot of his peers. He came back and took down a win and really put his head into the game. The young driver had 7 top 5s, and 11 top tens at season's end. Everyone’s looking forward to
seeing the progress Shawn makes over the next few years.

B-
13 races, 1 win, 7 top 5s, 11 top 10's

7) Eric Lutz
#36
Marjam Supply Chevrolet

This seasoned veteran looked poised to take the title in '07! It seemed after finishing second behind Steve Ratti for the title in 2006, Lutz would have to be the odds-on favorite to win the title in 2007. Eric Lutz did miss one race, but not because of a penalty, or not being ready in time. Eric had other obligations with his family. In fact, he was at another race track with his kids, who were racing go-karts. Missing that race has been overlooked in the grading and will be excused. But it seemed like Eric had this title if he just kept his nose clean and kept the same consistency he had in 2006. With the type of season he had and the most wins in the Chargers, why wasn't he up higher in the points standings? Did missing the one race really hurt him that much? If he has the same type of seasons he’s had in ‘06 and ‘07, Lutz will be a strong force again in 2008!

A
13 races, 4 wins, 8 top 5s, 11 top 10s

8) Mike Schwarz
#
14 B. Sexton Dvlpmnt. Pontiac

May the Schwarz be with you! -Mel Brooks, Spaceballs. A former Blunderbust and Figure 8 driver, he moved to the Charger division full time in 2006. In fact, he looked to improve on his win in 2006. He improved in points moving from 12th to 7th. Moving forward to 2007, Mike Schwarz gained another win, but his win was his only top 5, and he did have 7 top tens.

C+
14 races, 1 win, 1 top 5, 7 top 10s

9) Jim Donaldson
#
48 Loebs & Gordon Pontiac

"Slim Jim" just couldn't snap into it! It seemed like racing for owner Tim Gordon would have produced at least a win this past season. Jim came close on 3 different occasions, finishing in the top 5 three times. Maybe too many monkeys at the wrench; with strong support behind Donaldson's team, maybe it was too many chiefs and not enough Indians. The car looked to be strong some nights, but lagging behind on others. This top quality team can do it, it's just waiting for the breakthough. Once it breaks through, their confidence will catapult them to the next level.

C
13 races, 0 wins, 3 top 5s, 8 top 10s

10) Daryn Miller
#
30 Tarr Home Imprvmnts. Ford

Hear no evil, see no evil! The hearing impaired driver is one of the cleanest and well respected drivers on the track. It looked like he was going to gain his first victory on a few occasions. Daryn seems too clean at times and not enough on the edge. Over time, it will come to him. We've seen him progress a lot this past year, I'm looking forward to see what this kid has got! He doesn't let his disabilities get the best of him and keeps moving forward in life. He is an amazing guy and should be looked up to for his courage.

C
14 races, 0 wins, 1 top 5, 7 top 10s
