Chilly temperatures in the mid-30s didn’t stop many go-karters
from taking advantage of the first EEKR practice session at
Riverhead Raceway today. There was a mix of both old and new
faces. Acting President Dave Brigati and his officials completed
safety and tech inspection on each kart before it was allowed to
take to the 1/5-mile oval.
The 2007 Sr. Champ champion #46 Vinny Delaney was among those
on hand for the first practice. Over the winter months, Vinny
and his father invested in a new Sr. Champ kart from Extreme
Kart Supply. Based on his performance in practice, Delaney is
likely to be a strong contender for the 2008 championship
title.
The 2007 Jr. Champ Animal champion #6 Tommy Doelger also ran
some laps today. Doelger, however, will not be defending his
2007 title, as he is moving up to the Sr. Champ Animal class
this season. He looks to be a contender in his new class.
In other notes, Russ Skippon has a full-time ride this season
in the Lite class. He will be taking over the controls from his
long-time friend Jimmy Byrne in the Byrne Motorsports # 39,
which is owned by Jimmy's father, Gary Byrne. As a result, the
#72 Rustynail Motorsports entry previously driven by Russ will
have a new Chauffeur at hand. Russ’ younger brother Joe will be
behind the wheel of that kart in his first full season in the
Jr. Restricted class.
The next practice session for EEKR will be in two weeks, on
Saturday, March 22. Gates will open at 9am with practice to
follow.
