Many Go-Karters on Hand to Open 2008 EEKR Season
by Danielle McCormack

This past Sunday, April 6th, flocks of go-karters attended EEKR's first race of the 2008 season. Even overcast skies and a chill in the air didn't stop the go-karters from taking to the track.

Joe Hodge, driver of the #1 SR Champ Over 35 go-kart, commented that he hasn't seen this many people show up for opening day in recent years. This is a testimony to the fine job that Dave Brigati and his officials are doing to revitalize go-kart racing at Riverhead Raceway. "I am also glad to see the new season underway so I can once again prove to my competitors why I am #1 and the man to beat," Hodge stated.

News and Notes:
Last year’s JR I Champion, Kyle Soper, moved up a class and will not be defending his JR I championship title this year.

Last year’s Medium champion Jimmy Byrne has moved from Medium to SR Champ Raptor to see if he can capture that class’ championship as well this year.

JR Champ driver Brian Hansen this has moved from go-karts to cars.  He is going to be fielding a Blunderbust at Riverhead Raceway sometime this season and we wish him good luck.

Last year’s SR Champ Over 35 champion Joe Hodge is back this year to defend his title as champion in that class.

Tommy Doelger will not be defending his JR Champ Animal championship title.  He has moved to SR Champ Animal and hopes to find success in that class.  Among his competition in that class will be Trevor Perry and Vinny Delaney, who are hard chargers in the class.

Arty Tappen is off to a good start this season in the JR Sportsman Champ A class, taking down a win this past Sunday and trying to repeat as that division’s champion.

Another driver to look out for this season is Jason “Hollywood” Agugliaro in the Medium class. Jason hopes to capture that class’ title this year and add it to the many championships he already has. Jason this weekend also won the WPW Growers Medium Class $MONEY$ Race at Riverhead Raceway. Congrats go out to Jason on the win.

Many of us are glad to see that the 2008 season is finally here. It's nice to see some old friends from last year back at the track. It was also good to see some new faces as well. Remember, as my Bob McCormack always says, "Be there or be square!"

REMINDER:
This coming Saturday, April 12th's second scheduled race of the season has been postponed. This is due to the fact that many people have to work on Saturday. The race will be rescheduled some time later in the season. EEKR will be running practice in place of the race this Saturday. Gates will open at 9 a.m. with practice starting around 11 a.m. and running until 5 p.m.
