2008 Riverhead Raceway Super Pro Truck Season Review
by J.A. Ackley & Tracy Chirico

1) Dan Grennan
#38 PCHS Racing Engines Chevrolet

Grennan was, without a doubt, a dominating force in the Super Pro Truck division in 2007. The veteran driver scored five wins in 10 races and ultimately collected the championship hardware for the third time since ’02. Consistency was key for Grennan, who didn’t finish out of the top five all season. According to Grennan, he has no plans to race in ’08. His fans can only hope that the unsold truck in his garage will tempt him into changing his mind.

10 races, 5 wins, 10 top 5s, 10 top 10s

2) Lou Maestri
#
1 Schwing Electric Ford

In 2007, Maestri marked the milestone of his 20th season behind the wheel of a race car (or truck). In his bid for his third Super Pro Truck championship, Maestri ended the season tied in points with Dave Koenig, but walked away with second-place honors by virtue of a single win that came on the last night of racing. Maestri was satisfied with his season overall and is looking forward to his 21st season in ’08.

10 races, 1 win, 8 top 5s, 9 top 10s

3) Dave Koenig
#
97 Nelson's Auto Salvage Ford

Prior to the 2007 season, Koenig purchased a back-up truck due to a crash he had suffered at Lee USA Speedway at the end of the previous year, and had his hands full at the beginning of the season. According to Koenig, however, he was able to get things turned around with help from Ron Langdon and the Turbush family, and he came on strong as the season progressed. In fact, Koenig did not finish outside of the top four in the last six races of the season and was the only driver in the top five at the end of the season who hadn’t scored a win. Koenig will have plenty of time to contend for a win in ’08 as he plans to return for another full season in the division.

10 races, 0 wins, 8 top 5s, 10 top 10s

4) Mike Albasini
#
66 NY Metro Peterbilt Chevrolet

The “King of Queens” had a career year. In seven seasons of Super Pro Truck competition, Albasini earned two wins (his most per season and his first wins since ’04) and earned his best points finish with a fourth. That extra win came in handy as it broke the tie for fourth with Frank Dumicich Jr. The likeable driver from Bayside, N.Y. plans to run again in ’08, hoping to have fun and be competitive.

10 races, 2 wins, 5 top 5s, 10 top 10s

5) Frank Dumicich Jr.

Representing the second generation of racing Dumicichs (along with his sister Erin), Dumicich’s season consisted of a win and a top five points finish. What was one of the biggest surprises of the season was when Dumicich traveled out of state and took a win in an open-competition Truck event at Mountain Speedway, besting the three-time Riverhead Super Pro Truck champion and defending winner, Dan Grennan. Last year, Frank feels his setup was too inconsistent, which prevented him from his ultimate goal – to join his father in the record books as Super Pro Truck champion.

10 races, 1 win, 6 top 5s, 10 top 10s

6) Frank Dumicich
#
5 Wesemann's Sand & Mason Sply. Ford

The elder statesman of the division and the Dumicich clan had some strong runs last year, but lacked the consistency to turn it into a higher points finish. Victory lane escaped Dumicich’s grasps as well, as he’s gone winless for four years now, with his last win in ’03. With Teddy Bear Racing’s focus on consistency, Frank hopes to compete for the championship and the win with his children – Frank Jr. and Erin – and make it a Teddy Bear 1-2-3.

10 races, 0 wins, 6 top 5s, 7 top 10s

7) Wayne Meyer
#
41 VanBrunt Heating & Cooling Chevy.

While Meyer was in the Blunderbusts, he seemed to stuffer a never-ending stream of bad luck. However, in 2007, he seemed to find his niche in the tailgate brigade. Despite a “broken” truck for four races, a couple flats, and a couple of incidents, Meyer achieved his first career win at Riverhead. Meyer feels that if he had a couple more good breaks, he could have finished within the top five in points. While he says he has “absolutely no money for racing,” Meyer will go for it again in ’08 and hopes to win a few more races.

9 races, 1 win, 4 top 5s, 7 top 10s

8) Bobby Jones
#
43 Robert Jones Racing Chevrolet

After finishing just outside of the top 10 in points in 2006, Jones broke into the top 10 in ’07. The driver recorded seven top 10 finishes in 10 starts, and, according to Jones, he accomplished what he had set out to do for the season. Jones plans to make as many races as possible in ’08, though he may not run a full schedule.

10 races, 0 wins, 0 top 5s, 7 top 10s

9) P.J. Vecchio
#
19 Raceway Auto Sales Dodge

Vecchio’s another Blunderbust driver that made the change to the tailgate brigade. In the Blunderbusts, Vecchio achieved moderate success with a two top fives and six top 10s in 26 races over the course of two years. In his rookie truck season, he finished with a top five and seven top 10s in his total. While his goals were to win a race, he had a respectable season and, hopefully in his sophomore season, he will carry over his lessons learned from his rookie year.

9 races, 0 wins, 1 top 5s, 7 top 10s

10) Anthony Daleo
#
31 Joseph Daleo Contracting Chevy.

According to Daleo, the 2007 season was a big learning curve, during which he experienced plenty of growing pains. The driver admits that it was somewhat overwhelming trying to compete since he is essentially a one-man show – owner, crew chief, and driver. Daleo was satisfied to make every race in ’07 and walk away with a top 10 points finish in only his first year in the division. For ’08, Daleo intends to return with a new number – #28 – and gain more seat time running the full schedule as long as sponsorship allows.

10 races, 0 wins, 0 top 5s, 3 top 10s

~The End~
