Beautiful June-like weather and a stellar turnout of racecars
greeted fans this past Saturday at Riverhead Raceway for the
first of two pre-season practice sessions at Barbara and Jim
Cromarty's quarter mile oval. Round two of pre-season testing is
set for this Saturday April 26th.
Six divisions of NASCAR Whelen All-American Series stocks cars,
the returning INEX Legend Race Cars and the cars and stars of
the Riverhead Enduro Series combined to total nearly 150
racecars hitting the track.
Over a dozen NASCAR Modifieds took to the track headed-up by
defending champion Bill Park of Manorville. Other past NASCAR
Modified champions on hand shaking down their 2008 equipment
included Chuck Steuer of Bohemia, J.R. Bertuccio of Centereach
and Wayne Anderson of Yaphank.
The NASCAR Modifieds again will be the headline division of the
2008 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series and will be joined on
Saturday evenings by the Late Models, Figure Eights, Chargers,
Blunderbusts, Super Pro trucks and INEX Legend Race Cars.
Among other 2007 Riverhead Raceway champions on hand for
practice were 2007 Late Model kingpin "Dynamite" Danny Turbush
of Riverhead, Two-time defending Blunderbust champion Tommy "The
Wildchild" Walkowiak of Ridge. John Ellwood of Riverhead, the
2007 Charger champion showed up testing his new NASCAR Modified
that he'll run part time in '08.
2007 Grand Enduro champion Bobby "Peaseman" Pease of Medford and
4/6-Cylinder Truck Enduro champion Russ Jansen also of Medford
led the way for the over 60-Enduro teams that took advantage of
practice on a sun splashed afternoon.
After this Saturday's second practice sessions, which will carry
the same format and participating divisions as this past week,
all eyes will turn to the 2008 opening weekend at Riverhead
Raceway. Saturday evening May 3rd it will be the NASCAR stock
cars in their 2008 lid-lifter with qualifying at 4:30 pm and
feature racing at 5:30 pm, while on Sunday May 4th the Legend
Race Cars and Enduro competitors open their 2008 campaign.
