The unofficial "official" kick-off to
summer on Long Island is Memorial Day weekend and for Long
Island race fans that means a great doubleheader weekend of
stock car racing and family fun at Riverhead Raceway. Barbara
and Jim Cromarty will present a Saturday evening race card, as
well as a full day of racing and fun Sunday afternoon over the
May 24th & 35th weekend.
A Full Size School Bus Figure Eight race
will add some family fun to the Saturday evening NASCAR Whelen
All-American Series program, which will conclude with a bone
jarring, car destroying 4-Cylinder Demolition Derby. All the
usual daredevils are expected for both contests including 2007
Riverhead Demolition Derby champion Michael "Cheesebox" Rommeney
of Maspeth. Michael has become one of the fan favorites over the
last year or so and excels in these type events.
The Full-Size School Buses will try and
negotiate the tight confines of the Riverhead Figure Eight
course and during this race almost anything can and usually does
happen. As for the 4-Cylinder Demolition Derby, this will be the
first points paying derby of 2008 and after being off for over
seven months, the hitting should come often and be intense.
Saturday's show will find the features
starting at 5:00 pm and the NASCAR Modifieds will highlight that
Whelen All-American Series portion of the show, the Late Models,
Chargers, Blunderbusts and Super Pro Trucks will join them.
Meanwhile Sunday afternoon May 25th a
Blindfolded Taxicab Race, one of the wildest and funniest
novelty races to come down the road in many a season will be
presented. The driver of the Taxi is blindfolded and the
passenger is left to call out the directions and often the
result is wild and funny.
Legend Race Cars will see action Sunday May
25th on a card that starts at 12:30 pm, with a full compliment
of Enduro racing and One-On-One Spectator Drags also to see
action. There is a rain date for Monday May 26th for the Sunday
show only.
