On May 18 the EEKR returned to
Riverhead Raceway for their third race of 2008. The day looked
like it was going to be a nice and sunny day. But Mother Nature
decided otherwise. After each class concluded their practice
sessions and heats, it started to rain lightly. Acting President
Dave Brigati didn't want anyone to be disappointed, so he and
his EEKR officials decided to try to wait it out. It did stop
for a little while. They even had Justin Bonsignore take a few
laps to see if there was a chance they could still race. It was
to no avail, the rains returned. Brigati and his officials
decided it to call the day’s races. The club decided that since
all the heats races were run, they would be used as the features
and points would be awarded accordingly.
If you don't know by now, Turn One
Cowboy, John Thompson Jr. had a devastating fire in his garage
two weeks ago. Besides John losing his racing equipment, there
were others who lost theirs as well including Doug Ogiejko, John
Kellar, and Marrzmotorsports. It is going to take some time for
them to recover from this unfortunate accident.
At the last event, the EEKR racers
stepped up to the plate in an effort to get the recovery started
faster. Acting President Dave Brigati and his wife Cindy donated
$250 to both Thompson and his friends to help speed up the
recovery. Tom Bonsignore also helped speed up the effort by
giving each of karter involved in the fire a $200 credit for
kart supplies. Senior Champ over 35 driver Joe Hodge also went
around with a hat through the pit area, collecting about $450
from club members. It is amazing that in someone’s time of need,
how much everyone in the racing community pulls together as one
big family to help out one another.
In the photo gallery from May 18, there
are pictures to show you have devastating the fire was at
Thompson’s house.
This Sunday, June 2 is the next race
for EEKR at Riverhead Raceway. Gates will open at 8:00 am with
drivers’ meeting at 9:30 am. First practice starts at 10:00 am
with heat races and mains to follow.
