Veteran Riverhead Raceway announcer Bob Finan disclosed today
that he would be hosting an afternoon to recall the golden era
of stock car racing Sunday afternoon August 24th when Memory
Lane Cars & Stars will be presented at the historic oval.
"First off I want to thank Barbara and Jim Cromarty for the
opportunity to present Memory Lane Cars & Stars," Bob noted in
making the announcement. "We hope to have a great day of telling
stories, looking at old photo albums and watching some great
vintage racecars tour the Riverhead oval during the day at
various times."
The August 24th event is the only time that the vintage
racing machines actually get to take to the racetrack on Long
Island and there will be several rounds of on track activity for
the classic racecars. Finan also wanted everyone to know this
day has much more to offer. "I encourage folks to pack-up a
cooler, bring a tent or canopy and have a cookout while
reminiscing about Islip Speedway, Freeport Stadium and other
great tracks not just on Long Island, but up and down the east
coast," Finan encouraged.
Bob also added, "I know there are many drag racing
enthusiasts on Long Island and since Westhampton Raceway closed
a few years back we welcome all our 'straight-line' racers to
join us as well."
Admission is a modest $10 for a fun-filled day of memories
and vintage racecars on the 57-year old Riverhead Raceway. Pit
gates will open at 10:00 am and the first of many rounds of on
track activity will start at 12:30 pm for the vintage cars.
