The Long Island Gang Begins to Invade NELMA
by J.A. Ackley
The Long Island gang, a strong contingent of competitors that
race weekly at the tough quarter-mile Riverhead Raceway, have
begun to infiltrate the ranks of NELMA, preparing for the NELMA
Late Model Challenge on Saturday, October 25 at St. Johns,
Pennsylvania’s Mountain Speedway. Early sign-ups include
competitors Kenny Alfano and Jarrod Hayes.
Jarrod Hayes—Calverton, N.Y.
#08 Young Guns Motorsports Pontiac
NELMA Late Model Challenge Record: 2 starts, 1 win, 2 top
5’s, 2 top 10’s
Best Finish: 1st — 2006
Calverton, New York’s Jarrod Hayes, the 2006 NELMA Late Model
Challenge champion, returns this year after missing last year’s
event. Hayes entered the 2006 event at the last minute, hoping
to win the race so that his check for the entry fee wouldn’t
bounce. Hayes played the race smart, lurking in the background
until it mattered. On the last lap, the two leaders collided in
turn one and Hayes dove underneath them on to his way to
victory. Hayes is Long Island’s only NELMA Late Model Challenge
victor and hopes to become the event’s first repeat winner.
Kenny Alfano—Riverhead, N.Y.
#35 New York Brake Co. Dodge
NELMA Late Model Challenge Record: Rookie
While 2008 will mark Alfano’s first attempt at the NELMA Late
Model Challenge, he’s a veteran at Riverhead Raceway in the Late
Models. He has two feature wins at Riverhead and is known for
his distinctive neon green Dodge race cars. A win in October
would end his victory drought, with his last win coming on June
18, 2005.
This year’s NELMA Late Model Challenge is shaping up to be
the who’s who of Late Model racing. This year, in addition to
the Late Models, the Legends cars will grace the card with the
Legends Car Fall Classic. For more information and to sign up,
