This coming Sunday,
August 24th, Lilly Flannigan's in Islip will play host to a Las
Vegas night fundraiser for the Suffolk Association of Figure
Eight Racing (SAFER). A $30 ticket includes the first drink,
food and the initial buy-in to play table games (blackjack,
roulette, or craps). There will be prizes given away throughout
the course of the day, including a $500 cash grand prize. More
than 20 different gift certificates and other prizes will be
distributed during the event.
SAFER, formed in the early 1970s, is a group of racers and other
Figure 8 enthusiasts, whose primary goal is to further the
Figure 8 division. Working together, the members collaborate on
different ideas and explore avenues designed to keep the racing
safe, affordable, and exciting, and to preserve its future here
on Long Island. SAFER adminsters its own point fund and hosts
its own banquet each year in addition to the raceway's awards
dinner.
In 2008, several members have taken an active role in
revitalizing SAFER, to the benefit of all racers and other
members involved. The group's web site has received a boost, and
Leah Maynor has reintroduced the 50/50 raffle at the track on
Saturday nights to raise money for the organization.
Tickets are still available for the event. Anyone looking for
more information or wishing to offer a donation or sponsorship
for the event can contact Leah Maynor at
