Hanna Washes Out
Riverhead; Park and Rogers Jr. Earn Titles
The final full blown NASCAR Whelen All America Series program
Saturday September 6th at Riverhead Raceway fell victim to
tropical storm Hanna forcing Barbara & Jim Cromarty to call the
show early in the day. The track will return to action this
Saturday for the $1,500 to win Miller Lite National Demolition
Derby Championship along with a full slate of extra distance
racing.
For once the local weather people hit this forecast right on
the nail as indeed Hanna hit Long Island right in the time frame
they predicted, which would have been right at the end of
qualifying and just prior to the features. With the safety of
everyone involved at Riverhead Raceway and wanting to save
everybody a trip to the track that would have been in vain, The
Cromarty's called the show at 8:30 am.
The 50-lap NASCAR Modified feature event will not be made-up,
nor will the final Late Model race of the season as the
remaining slate at Riverhead for 2008 is jam packed and the next
two weeks are also non-NASCAR events.
For the second year in a row Bill Park and his owner/wife
Barbara of Manorville are the NASCAR Modified championship,
Bill's 4th overall title putting him just one shy of a four way
tie for the most championships. Wayne Anderson, Don Howe and the
late "Charging" Charlie Jarzombek all won five Riverhead Raceway
Modified titles. Park is also tied with Howe and John Berkoski
for 6th on the all-time Riverhead Raceway win list.
For Tom Rogers Jr. of Patchogue his first Late Model
championship is indeed his 4th overall at the 57-year old
facility as prior to his 2008 LM crown he had earned two Figure
Eight and one NASCAR Modified championship along the way. Rogers
and car owner Jimmy Wichert of Unique Golf literally teamed-up
just one day prior to the first practice day back in April.
Joining the Miler Lite National Demolition Derby this
Saturday September 13th will be the 30-lap races for the
Chargers, Blunderbusts and Super Pro Trucks with time trial
qualifying, while the Figure Eights will go 25-laps and draw for
starting position at the back gate. A Full Size School Bus
Demolition Derby will also add to the fun. The 30-lap SPT race
will be run in honor of the late Joe DeGangi and Carl Rackoff.
Time Trials will be at 4:00 pm and the feature events with
such a busy card will go green at 5:30 pm. For further
