After a month off, it’s time for East End
Kart Racing (EEKR) drivers to get back in the swing of things at
Riverhead Raceway with their eighth meet of the year this
Sunday, September 14. Gates open at 7:30 a.m. with the drivers’
meeting at 9 a.m. Afterwards, makeup races from July 24’s
rainout will begin. There will be no heats for them. Racers will
start their mains based on where they were slated to for the
heats. After completion of the makeup races, the regularly
scheduled program for September 14 will start.
Personal Note
For the last year and a half I’ve been
writing for the EEKR but never had the thrill of racing a
go-kart at Riverhead Raceway. Although I have tried my father’s
go-kart in a parking lot, its not the same as on a track. When I
asked my parents if I could race a go-kart it was about the same
time we found out that I was born with only one kidney. My
parents and doctors decided it was in my best interest not to
race in case I ever injured my only kidney. So instead of
racing, I decided to do the next best thing – write about it,
but it’s not the same. After talking to my parents about this,
my dad said that I might be able to at least take a few laps in
a go-kart at Riverhead to get a feel for go-kart racing. We
talked with acting EEKR President Dave Brigati and he thought it
would be a great idea. So, with a little help from Joe Hodge, my
dream will come true this Sunday. By next time, not only will I
be writing about go-kart racing, I will finally have had the
thrill racing a go-kart at Riverhead Raceway.
