Fourteen-year-old Long Island racer Chris Young made an
encouraging debut in his first legends car race Saturday at the
one-fifth mile paved oval at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. The event
marked the first Winter Heat race of the 2008-09 season. After a
fine second-place finish in his heat race, Young qualified for
the Young Lions A-Main feature in his first attempt, starting
14th and finishing 18th. Over 10 Young Lions entrants failed to
make the A-Main.
“The car was awful loose in the feature,” Chris began. “It
cooled off as the day went on, so I think we should have
adjusted for the cold weather a little bit more than we did. We
were pretty good earlier in the day, but we weren’t as good when
it counted.”
Young drove a No. 49 legends car owned by Kyle Beattie Racing
after testing throughout the fall months. Saturday marked Chris’
first actual day of race competition after years of watching his
father, Chris, race modifieds at Riverhead (N.Y.) Raceway, among
other Northeast short tracks.
“It was good to get on the track and race after a lot of
practice. We started right in the middle of the field so it gave
me a chance to run wheel-to-wheel with some different cars. All
in all, it was a pretty good day. I spun out in the feature and
I didn’t want to do that, but it’s all a part of learning. It
was cold and real loose out there. We’ll be better next time,”
said Chris.
Young will be racing in selected Winter Heat races at Lowe’s
throughout the winter months. He and his family travel from Long
Island to Charlotte for Chris to race and gain experience before
the official 2009 season begins in the spring.
Chris Young is a 14-year-old legends car racer. He’s been
